You could buy sheep in other markets and get profit pitching them back in hereford!I was talking to a carmarthen farmer in Hereford and he said he and four of his friends/neighbours book a lorry between them and go to Hereford with cull ewes and lambs and they were £10 a head better off after the transport
Just don't assume your big ewes are big until you've seen the big ewes in Hereford! Even the Welsh ewes in the top prices are monstersYou could buy sheep in other markets and get profit pitching them back in hereford!
Salisbury was going down the decline route, store cattle were virtually non event, calves could be down to single figures, prices weren't bad, and payment was quick, the problem was 'attitude'. They now have a young auctioneer, for the stores and calves, totally changed those two sections round, calves now on a Monday, since Shaftsbury closed, but good numbers, a bit seasonal, with the grazing herds on the plains, and store cattle are in the hundreds now, again, a very good trade, While the young auctioneer, might not be every bodies cup of tea, there can be no mistake of how he has turned the trade around !
A few of the hill boys around here have started to take lambs to Hereford two or three of them together. Always seemed daft to me but if its as good as you say it is no wonder they are going there.Hereford markets become the sheep mecca and pulled alot of sheep away from markets far and wide in wales
See below...I keep hearing friends and neighbours muttering about issues and therefore not risking anything there. Vicious circle at that point, I suppose.
It is a fact that it is a really fine mart, well located, great facilities, good access and superb breakfasts. Why are the farmers not supporting them???
Yes, ND in NCE. And thriving, resurrected weekly calf sales, not seen since the early 90's.I hope bjp turn it around but they aren't releasing statements to relay confidence back to the farmers.
Help and council are two words that aren't muttered much together!
Nock Deighton, are they the ones running Newcastle Emlyn mart?
It was probably our dodgy Welsh accents!took the kids on holiday, years ago now, saw Carmarthen mkt, so, under protest, we went to have a 'look', and couldn't understand the auctioneer, at all, local firm to us, had a lorry there, asked the driver, his answer, nor can i.
TB also has a large part to play in the demise of marts. Cardigan’s closure was partly blamed on it, the Assembly are in denial about TB. Personally haven’t been to the mart for years, unfortunately not by choice.
Maybe, wouldn’t know as I’ve been shut down for so long. You can’t really blame the demise of some marts on TB, when there are other marts in the same area that are thriving. It’s more to do with the attitude of the auctioneers and the efforts they’re willing to put in to attract buyers and sellers.
From what one or two people tell me, bjp seem to be their own worst enemy. Help was offered to them on the dairy side, but the reply was 'thanks but no thanks'I was there 2 weeks ago . Dead . Tragic to see it like that ,
