Anyone going on Saturday? Spoken to a couple of breeders who reckon there is a bit of a buzz about the sale with it being the first live pedigree sale since lockdown. With lambs having been a good trade hopefully there will be commercial buyers willing to part with some cash too.
Would like to go down (Curiosity) but other priorities, hopefully get some hay made, hope they are a decent trade but who knows, the ram trade is so often the complete opposite from what is expected !!

good trade for year that’s in it, especially considering amount of lambs sold privately.

I thought it was a fair sale as you say. The private sales took a number of buyers out the equation meaning that I suspect most buyers would be able to secure their first choice with less competition. I know we sold a lamb at 800gns which the buyer had tried to buy at home. He told me afterwards that he didn't expect to get him at that price and had been prepared to go a lot more for him. But you always win some and lose some. Got 1000gns for another so not too bad in the circumstances. Overall thought their were a few good sheep there but a lot with far too much wool for my liking. The Foxhill and Bronwydd lambs were standouts for me.

Don’t know what flock you are sheepwise but was two lambs I was interested in one made 800 coincidently and other 880 (bought by a friend with offer to use on few ewes), but not being able to travel put me off tbh.
Another friend of mine was underbidder on top Bronwydd lamb but same thing didn’t want to go mad based on videos only.

watching the feed , seemed the also rans took the brunt of the reserves or couldnt get to upset price , the usual breeders sold their pen leaders well , i thought there was still some bargains for those willing to travel , pity they didnt have online bidding like our local auction house as i would have taken a punt on a few that didnt make upset and a couple of interesting shearlings , I was making hay unfortunately to loose a day . hope to get a couple to run through between exeter , hereford and maybe the online signet sale this autumn

Did they not have online bidding? I thought that was supposed to be getting set up.

no , shame think it would have added a base or a % to sales , seeing ram after ram passing through @390 ns , worth a punt on a few with good heritage if only for commercial use , also considering cost to breeders to get them there might have helped out

It was a lot better trade than I was expecting tbh, considering the numbers that have changed hands previously (I’ve never started a year like it personally, and will be short on yearlings for next year I think, as a result).

Fancied sheep sold ok, but not to the level seen normally. As usual, there were plenty there that just didn’t have that little extra something needed to appeal. An increase in the upset to 400gns on lambs wouldn’t help the commercial base much either I would think, but any ram entered there SHOULD be better than that imo.

I picked a lamb up in partnership, not that I particularly want to share him but didn’t want to fight with friends either. He was the only lamb I wanted to take home, and not the one I went there to look at.

Of those I handled, there were a few that wouldn’t have got through inspection imo, which had been suspended for this year as part of the distancing. I hope nobody buying on the phone gets disappointed when their purchases arrive!

On the whole though, I have to say I was disappointed with a lot of the sheep, and especially in a lot of those that appeared in demand. Yes, they were turned out very well, and had been managed very well to date, but favour seems more and more to fall with the big, framey rams with strong heads and plenty of bone. I would describe most as what are called ‘shearling makers’, which produce a great pen of shearlings when managed appropriately, but would lack natural fleshing at slaughter weight, without the management these have received from birth.

I find that direction of travel in the breed quite sad, but fully understand why people breed them that way. That’s just my personal opinion of course.:(

I didn't write them down, but I'm pretty sure I saw a couple making over £1k? I admit that I wasn't paying much attention by that point, as nattering to do, but they looked a tidy pen.
yes you might be right on his pen leaders , but pretty sure the second run were all unsold
