Harvest/Yields 2020

How long can winter wheat stick this weather before serious losses ? It’s only August 22 and it’s getting worse ! Never saw this so early!

Driving up the M5 today to market the WW looked utterly shocking, I have never seen it look so black even in years that it wasn't cut until very late in Sept and yet we still have a week in August to go!

The same fields started to look black last weekend but just unreal how they have got so bad in just seven days!

My spring oats are still green and at least 14 days off being ready to chuck some roundup on ( hate doing it but this is the year that needs must ) so thankfully they haven't lost any grain's in the hellish weather the last few days even thou they have gone from standing up and proud to very badly leaning over in less than 4 days!

Well i think i can beat most here for bad yields. 12 acres of wheat, <5 tons in the trailer. 4 1/2 bales of straw. 7 acres of barley yielded 7 tons of barley. 16 acres of beans in one 8 ton trailer. Oats should be better, and the rest of the wheat might get a ton an acre!! What a sh!t year...
I have competition I see 😬

Slept like a baby. Didn't even get to the beer. Had a little lie down at 8pm and just woke up. Fully dressed of course.

Few others were cutting yesterday. Reports of spring sown winter wheat all seem to be doing 2t/AC. I attach a picture I took of some that may be a tad late to combine. There's a lot of very green corn. I won't say what area of spring barley my combine contractor has the cut for his customers but a) it's bloody scary and b) some will have to take it damp. The best spring barley's here were either drilled in march before the serious heat; drilled into autumn worked land and double rolled.

I'd estimate the yields here to be 4t/ha oats, with maybe 1.5t/ha on the floor. 5t/ha barley. Given the spend and adding in the bps both will make a small profit next year even before the straw, which will cover the loss on the 200ac I didn't crop.

Best paying crop - 50ac ab6 and ab15.

Im having a few days loading corn to go to @Woldgrain Storage ; a couple of days on the holiday to Suffolk; then apart from a little bit of land work I'm available if anyone needs a hand corn carting, spraying, pushing up or loading wagons ; or just (light) shovelling. Just send a pm.

Forgot the pic! This is quite widespread.

That doesn't seem too bad.

Is that going to be general farm policy now then?

i’m not sure there is much to learn from this year oruer than be reminded that the weather and soil typre are what really determines yield

We are averaging circa 6.5t/ ha so far with maybe a bit better to come which is WAY better than i had feared and with a very low input spend may not be a total disaster

“Farm to crop and conditions potential” has always been my mantra which we certainly did this year. In a season where more potential exists I guess we would push more in hope of producing more though

I think we can safely say our Skyfall 2nd wheat didn't leave a margin!

Spring wheat possibly, but unfortunately there was a failed winter wheat crop and a wasted pre-em before it which has to be attributed somewhere.

Average oat yield plummeting. Reckon we've lost 1 t/ha on the floor due to this wind Yields down to 3.2 t/ha. Turns a loss into a big loss.
Our oats had already got roots on before the wind due to the previous wet and humid week, and had lost weight they are now only 42 kg hl now and look weathered ,what is left of them.

The green and yellow look is common to all cereals here that were heavily worked and down in the April heatwave. Plenty of barley won't be fit until October. ......on land that needs to be ready to drill in October. Could be a perfect year to sell lots of fancy drills.

Sun shines on the righteous! Potatoes next??
I don’t know what I have done!
The sun seems to have completely disappeared here for the past 10 days and just as the Spring Oats and Spring Wheat are becoming ready they’re is no decent weather forecast for the next 2 weeks!
The bloody weather forecast seems to change on an hourly basis and it looks like the Combine will have stood still for a month before it gets used again.
I even turned its battery isolator off this morning!

On Friday I thought I'd better check ours was where I left it 2 weeks ago. Started her up and set drum and header going, then had a drive around a muck heap.
Check on her again in a fortnight's time 🙄
