Thanks just done some googling on it, says that it reduces bloat due to the tannins in it, are these the same as in yarrow?

My thinking is by using a good proportion of yarrow, trefoil and maybe sainfoin, I could offset any bloat from red clover?
Just like all those dock herbs you have spent money on removing!
If it all goes ahead next year I'm hoping to measure what milk yield does on ryegrass vs red clover so will be interesting to see.
You might all be right and it's an entire waste of time, land and money but I would almost like to try and fail than not try at all. If it goes well then great but if not I can change my mind after the third year anyway and swap it for ryegrass with relatively few issues, and until then could just use it for silage ground but i would have to buffer feed then
Have you tested these mixes before signing up to a 5 year CSS agreement.
What happens if they dont work? Having to pay back a lump of cash and reseeding or buying feed will hurt?

Cows dont like docks though, they do like chicory, plantain, lucerne etc

Yes currently got several different test plots in at home but obviously used for suckler cows/sheep rather than dairy cows.

Theres an option to quit after the third year without paying back any money but you dont apply for the money in year 4 and 5.
I wont need to buy in feed even if they all fail and not a blade of grass can be seen across the entire 40 acres, as I will be under stocked for the first 3 years whilst I build numbers.
Then after the third year if they have been nothing more than a disaster I can cancel the stewardship agreement, put them into corn for wholecrop to clean the fields up and then back into ryegrass and white clover for when I will be fully stocked

Chicory seems to go woody too quick.

Know someone who grew it on an organic farm and had to graze it every 2 weeks , grass wasn't advanced enough for grazing. Forced the rotation.

Grown it twice and killed it twice within 18 months of planting, grew it with rye grass and had the same problem and also grew it with white clover was lethal from bloat when chicory died back.

How much clover did you put in
I think these Herbs are better put in as a mix rather than pure stands unless you know one that dies really well on your soil - but then the weather is so unpredictable
