Any one else panicking

If at any point in time everyone went out and topped up their tank with fuel the pumps would run dry, there is no shortage of fuel its just in the tanks of selfish people rather than those that need it
Exactly, I could easily have gone and put an extra 25 litres of fuel in my car over the past few days, but I have enough for the coming week & so I've held off. I will be needing at least 30 litres next Monday, preferably 50 as I have a long journey to do, but I'll take my chances rather than contribute to the current blip.

Local garage had a delivery Friday afternoon. Went up early Saturday morning and put usual £20 of diesel in truck (thinking no need to panic) checked on stock and passed by an hour later. Place was rammed and queues down the road. It had run out by early afternoon. Same with all garages within 20miles of me. Now on fumes and can't risk going off farm until I know there is fuel somewhere close. Daughter lives in city and will hopefully bring me a Jerry can of fuel after lunch. Wish I'd done what everyone else did and panicked. Country's toast if we have a real crisis.

Who can be bothered with putting £20 in a vehicle these days ?
95% of the time I wait until there is less than 100 miles left then fill up to the brim at the next most convenient opportunity. the only time it differs from this is prior to a long journey when i try to set of full.

This. Forecourts are boring enough places without going more often than you need to, and the very act of going adds miles to the truck, unless you're lucky to have one on your normal route. I've actually taken to filling the vehicle plus a few drums when I do go, to cut my number of visits even more.

Back in the 70/80s there always seemed to be fuel shortages. I had stopped at a garage in Wiltshire with my gauge on empty to find a sign saying locals only, £5 limit. However the nice lady on the pump said the boss was out, so she'd fill me up. I set off with a full tank, but a minute later had these thoughts, how had she got 20 gallons in the tank ? I'd never managed more than about 13. Why was my fuel gauge not working ? Why was there a strong smell of petrol ?. Opening the boot I found it several inches deep in petrol and realised she had knocked the filler pipe off the tank. I did not panic but removed a rubber bung that Triumph had fitted to let water out. There was a loud hissing noise as the petrol hit the the hot exhaust underneath. I then panicked as I tried to find the bung while sticking my finger in the 'ole. The petrol had melted the sealer in the boot and was a black colour so couldn't be reused. Half an hour later I had drained the petrol out, refitted the filler pipe and set off again looking for petrol. Perhaps she hadn't been such a nice lady.
Happy days, not.

In the 80's there was a garage in just about every village, with someone who would ask you how much you wanted before filling your tank and shooting the breeze. Another bygone like the village shop, victims of the 'big shop in town' who are now ironically trying to fill empty shelves, and hanging up the yellow tags on the pump nozzles.
It's a poor state of affairs when the 'last man standing' is starting to wobble.

If we manage to have them here with our geography, it should not be a problem in the UK.
May be. But if you were a landowner with 20 acres alongside the motorway, compulsory purchase or no, your agent would strike a multi £1000's deal with the district valuer. Who pays the bill? The taxpayer.
I'm not anti HGV and fully support the calls for decent facilities, but at the end of the day it comes down to cost.

Yes you are right Bongodog and Highland Mule.
Don't get out much and local garage is my food co-op too so go there most days. Got into the habit of only putting in fuel to keep tank about a third full ( tank is low slung on back of truck and a full one would add even more weight to already loaded up truck that likes to scrape over rocks/tree stumps etc)and never ran out in years.
Will now change my habit, try and take some of the crap out of the truck and carry more fuel as suggested.

Like I suggested, turn it the other way and make it a planning condition for all these new mega warehouses going up. One on the A1 somewhere near Stamford now absolutely massive as well as the ones near Milton Keynes. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that but get 20 of those up and running with good shower facilities in the next few years and it would make a huge difference

4. When will Grant Schapps announce the first French style Aire de Parking complete with shower blocks for truckers etc ?
The Govt require local Councils to provide a place for the Irish Caravanners to park up and operate their "businesses".

WTH don't they do something similiar for Hauliers? Either as you say, an Aire type park, or even a large commercial style setup that is properly scrutinised and maintained to a good standard.
