All valid points. But you forget one point. Big business doesn’t give a flying fig about their suppliers input costs… as I said, they’ve done it before. They didn’t care then, they don’t care now. It’s all about maximum profit today, even if it means shooting themselves in the foot for next year!
We just need too keep our fingers and legs crossed that nothing big comes along and upsets the apple cart.
It`s all true and what is even MORE worrying is that government doesn`t give a toss either way too...... They REALLY should have the future of BRITISH farmers and FOOD SECURITY as a real priority in these very uncertain times.....

What was St John's average like? Couldn't see a report on FB.

That was my second choice if I hadn't got filled up at Kendal.

Hard to tell very varied set off looking cheap ish but a lot of ewes you wouldn’t want for the mule job. The cheaper ewes not much over £100 good ewes for mule job straight to £150 or more a lot in around £140 mark
A couple of top pens £400 ish
They got dearer towards the end

On the other hand they could be worth £80 next March. We can all have a cry together then.
It’s happened before! Just not involving quite this much money!!

I don’t think they’ll be £80, but I don’t think they’ll be up to this Spring’s prices either.

The big retailers are all putting store lambs out with contracted finishers, so won’t be held to ransom again. They are reportedly struggling to buy stores cheap enough in any number though.
HCC are reporting kill numbers down 10% recently, when we normally see a glut. Those lambs will have to come out later, so they’re unlikely to be as short as this Spring.

Too many people expecting a repeat for it to happen?

I think it’s very likely. The big businesses got caught out this spring and they didn’t like it. They will do everything they can this year too mitigate it.
I’m just hoping that everyone follows the old adage of “weight pays” and they flood the spring market with 50kg+ hoggs. This leaves me a lovely little niche in the 35-42kg range for my little reprobates too fill! 😂😂

I'm with you here. I think we will see the most level lamb trade over a 12 month period for a some time. Haven't sold a lamb below £100 this season yet and don't expect too but am not expecting the serious highs of last spring this time.

My lowest has been £85 because I needed cash quick 😅 but my highest was £185… last year my highest was £105 and lowest £65 so either I’m getting better at drawing or life’s just getting better haha

More than last year?
Ahhh, now I haven’t seen the numbers for that yet. Numbers have certainly been well up at the Marts I use. wether that means there are more about or people are selling faster this year I don’t know. I was talking too a BIG livestock haulage man the other week and he was saying how many thousand more lambs than normal had come south of the border from Scotland for the time of year.

It be interesting to see the facts for that and in terms of where killing numbers are,
My thinking is that trade has been good all the way though so people have kept killing...and in Theory that should make them short later, and maybe with store prices being so good people have push them out earlier 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ but maybe I am wrong and try to convince my self at these store price are fine and nothing to worry bout 🤔😂

Some places in Scotland have had drought and shifted lot of lambs early etc , I’m lead to believe not many store lambs about right down south either .

But you can't kill hill lambs till they are ready. A lot of good hill lambings in this area this year, don't know about rest of country. Also all these hill farms going to trees, could be a lot of surplus hill bred ewe lambs too.

Don’t worry! I’m doing the same! 😂😂 I’ve a lot more feeding sheep here than this time last year! 😂😂
