Have the ability to double our acerage with reasonable rents and an open rotation 50/50 balance spring /winter cropping but and the but is we currently farm good dirt and more of it is comfortably achieved but series 3 clay blackgrass stuff we'd be putting the boards up or seriously rejigging things

Just pay the tax and enjoy,
It’s an asset rich cash poor case. When I moved here I had no dependants and land was cheap so paying out a mortgage was easier. No land prices have gone crazy and out of reach for buying and wouldn’t be prudent to buy unless another generation was keen to take over. I enjoy what I do so I never work a day. I’ve never had much new equipment to use but most is well maintained and my cost per acre is pretty low. yes I’d like not to have to repair as much but old habits die hard. Basically I’m a cheap f ecker. Lol

Wouldn't take much to make me give up, though it would directly and indirectly effect 9 other people not including my wife and kids, we will probably have to sell up when anything happens to my parents anyhow as my brother and sister will fall out about what is contained in the wills, they both think the other should get nothing and I will be stuck in the middle trying to sort the sh#t show out !

The only " joy " is driving classic blue scrap metal. If it becomes compulsory to use leccy tractors, any more rules / licences / certificates from the likes of RT, or a continuation of high input costs coupled with decidedly meh crop income and I'm retiring completely. Been renting 1/3 of my ground out for spuds lately. It's quite nice watching stuff rather than doing stuff TBH.........

Watch this video and you'll understand why electric Commercial vehicles will be unlikely to very unlikely.

I put a like but it wasn’t because I liked your situation. feel bad for any farmer having to deal with money hungry siblings.

Thanks, it's a strange one really, both of them have never gone without, brothers kids and my sister's children have had or are having a private education, something I could only dream about for my kids, but they both seem to think they're badly off ! Myself and my wife dream is to emigrate to Canada but the situation here makes it pretty impossible to do to be honest ! But you never know what the future holds !

More always wants more, it's never enough.
During a discussion about father's will My sister had the nerve, to demand that my father tell her if he really wanted her to have her half.(there has never been any suggestion he wouldnt)
Another one who doesn't need it is, well off but she wants her half.

Fir me Canada was a massive risk but it was only me on my own to worry about. Was lots of land to be bought here fir a fraction of land in the uk. Not quiet as an attractive proposition now but if you come with some reasonable money and are willing to work there is still a very good standard of life. Workers here are very hard to come by so even if you’ll need extra income from outside work it’s very well paid. If interested pm me.

Fair isn't always equal.

My brother (and sister - died :( ) never expected anything from the farm as they never helped as kids, while I was never in the house.
I've made sure brother has a 75 acre farm and house out of the shareout 10 years ago. It's about 1/5 of our parents' estate.
If there's anything left when he and partner have gone it will probably come back to my kids, but that's his choice.

It was good that our Dad sorted things out when we were 40 rather than 60.
We can paddle our own canoe now and choose our direction.
Bless him.

I like the work, don’t mind the low hourly pay rate. What I do mind is the 24/7/365 commitment and responsibility. I said something to someone last week... « I would make an excellent farmers father ». I’m envious of @Bald Rick

Have you thought about adopting? I might be available, for the right terms of course, none of this ‘one day son, it’ll all be yours’. :)
