DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (April 1st) sold 8,037 sheep of all classes, including the annual spring sale of ewe lambs.
Ewe lambs (5,575) averaged £96.26 and sold to £190 gross for a pen of blue Texel’s from Broombank, Culloden Moor.
Wedder lambs (1,979) averaged £87.28 and sold to £124 gross for a pen of Texel Crosses from 5 Drynoch, Carbost.
Ewes and Feeding Sheep (411) sold to £220 gross for a Cross from Kilmaluag House, Duntulm. Breeding Sheep (72) sold to £155 gross for a pen of Blackface in lamb gimmers from Ruivard, Alness.
“Another epic day trading was witnessed in Dingwall as over 8,000 sheep graced the ring with their presents. Buyers were plenty as they flocked from all corners, as far south as Wales, Cumbria, and Yorkshire in-between and of course the Scottish contingent was in full force. Trade did not disappoint in the slightest with averages being up on the year. In fact, the trade was quite simply frantic and ferrous. Best quality cheviot ewe hoggs were in short supply and many buyers went home not obtaining the required numbers. Beltex cross hoggs also met fierce enquiry and many more of this commodity could have been sold
A Special mention and a highlight in the sale today was the generosity of 2 of our vendors firstly from Mr Macmillan, Inverhshiel who donated 10 ewe hoggs that were sold in pairs for Macmillan Cancer Relief. Top Price pair realised £130 to Mr T Holmes, Lockerbie and all in the 10 hoggs realised £1,212 for the aforementioned Charity. Also forward was a pair of cross hoggs that were donated to the Ukrainian fund from Macinnes, Sasaig which went on to sell for £199 per head again to the ever-generous Mr T Holmes, Lockerbie.”
