So just for an interesting project I decided to try and convert an old knackered Kawasaki KD125 to an ebike , I guess it could be an E Motorbike , but As I don't have bike licence and the MX bike would not have a V55 it could not be used on the road legally anyway so I fitted pedals of Puch Moped to make it a "E Bike with pedal assist" that looks like a Kawasaki MX Bike so I could "sort of legally" ride it on a road if required although Strictly speaking its to heavy and powerful to comply with current legislation. however old electric pedal assist bikes did not have such weight and power restrictions that are a relatively recent adoption and this bike predates that legislation so is a sufficiently grey area I think
This was for me more about the look of the bike than the performance I really wanted to keep that dated twin shock look although in theory this could have some pretty good performance with a 5000 w motor that theory at least could do 60 mph but i think 25 to 30 would be fast enough for me.
I got the 5000w hub motor via ebay from china that came with the speed controller , display, freewheel , and disc brake . I had to narrow the swing arm to fit the wheel , fabricate the pedal crank mount widen the pedal axle , fabricate a disc brake mount for the rear wheel , source the chain and sprocket, mount the speed controller , wiring junction box etc and source the battery for it .
I also made a battery box and added some additional trims to it to make it look a little less like a battery and "slightly more like a engine" and then changed the front forks to be disc compatible along with the front wheel as the motor controller has feeds for cut outs that are operated by the disc brakes to cut the motor power when the brakes are applied plus the old forks where very badly corroded.
the whole thing got a bit of paint job to freshen it up considerably as it was looking like real shed when I got it and after a quick spin today its looking and riding pretty good
I'm still waiting for a couple of front brake parts to complete it but overall, I'm pretty happy with it.
Not sure at this point of the range it running a 72v 30Ah battery so should be a reasonable way but time will tell.
