What did you save up for but never buy.

Had a 1.6gti. Cherry red.

Always wanted a 1.9 until I saw a mates after it went thru a hedge at speed sideways.

The 1.6 ate its engine and I replaced it with the GRD model. Diesel.

That is as near as fast as the 1.6 but was so front heavy it was a pig to drive.

That got swapped for a 309 GTI. Loved that car.
Diesel 205s were grand if they had wider wheels fitted from a 1.6 GTi. Maybe not quite so much fun but it lifted the cornering speed a decent amount. Never had a 309 but did try a 405 Mi16 which caught fire on the test drive :ROFLMAO: .

Damn you, going to have to look at autotrader again...

An engine rebuild kit for my Continental Fergie. I pull it out of the shed every few years and do a few bits, then think "Do I really want to rake the hay with a thing with a 2 litre petrol engine?" and it goes back in the shed.

Looked a bargain for condition but not seen any sold for years !
Sunroof wasn’t right and interior looked rough as, bodywork was dimples like a golfball but I’d still be tempted at that money.

Better with a “J” 1.6 too, for the uprated engine. That one was better than the 1.9s too, out of the box.

Saved up for a Porsche 911 in the early 1970's - was 8 Deutschmarks to the £ & £3500 would get a good second hand version...... met my wife & ended up with a house, kids, mortgage etc etc.

Speaking of "interesting drives", I had a Cooper S, then heavily modified it with Will Sparrow's engineers in Brum. 1450cc, lightened balanced nitrided , 649 cam (madness!) then 731 cam Weber 45DCOE. About 115bhp I suppose. Straight cut gearbox, my own drop gear mods. Huge fun - spin front wheels in top in the wet, third in the dry. Very flexible with the 731 cam , but ate front tyres (165's )in 3000 road miles, could get 5000 out of 12" wheels.
Had a lend of a similar car with a limited slip diff once - now THAT was "interesting", trying to keep that on the black stuff in the lanes was impossible for me anyway!

Amazing the way priorities change once marriage comes along - ho - hum:scratchhead:

20 Years ago saved for a Corrado G60 Corrado in Blackberry... Ended up with a house and a Cavalier GLi
First car I bought after having a handown mini was a 1.3 cavalier 2door, was four years old I think, I had wanted one ever since I saw a tv advert for them, front seat was great at reclining much easier than courting in a mini😀. Sold it after I got married for a four door version 1.6 great cars

My saving wish goes back a lot further . When I was at school , I absolutely coveted a new "Royal Enfield lightweight sports " bike I got half a crown spending money from my g.father for milk carting Sat and Sun mornings , so my parents said I could ask the shop to save it and enter their savings scheme , at no extra cost . I think it was £6 odd and I had a little bit of a start , so, away I went . Fast forward to the great day , I got my final half crown Saturday lunch time ,and ran all the way up to the shop , only to find it had closed . I honestly sat on the shop step and cried ! I did get it on the next Monday , drop handlebars an' all , and final flourish , a chrome "bullet" on the end of the front mudguard . No dynamo though - that had to come later .
