A generation ago when I was young Easter was just a day, maybe a chocolate egg, End of school year you said goodbye to your mates until September Halloween was not particularly celebrated and a bonfire on Nov 5’th.
Then Christmas which was the celebration of the year with a few decs and presents.

Now Easter is commercialised, Prom at school with outfits and party, halloween, bonfire night and Christmas all seem to roll into one.

Just ban them all an cut out a huge amount of carbon emissions and costs on families.

commonwealth games cost 800,000,000 to put on plus the cost of all the athletes supported by their government funding sporting bodies……. The money flying around is madness.

there was something like 1.5million tickets of which they sold the majority... only need an average ticket cost of £533 in order to ensure the games broke even.... I will admit we did go to "soak up the atmosphere" in Brum on Sunday and the city was very very busy but I am not sure I saw all that much evidence of where £800,000,000 was spent.

games seem to have been very popular, lots of friends went to watch, tickets were not cheap either

never sure if these things really ever return what they cost directly however but how do you measure indirect benefits like more people taking up sports, spending money doing so and saving NHS cash long term ?

also think how much beyond tickets is spent in hotels and food etc over the days its on and leading up to it for contractors and facilitators / employment payroll generated by it all etc ? the money doesn’t leave the uk it just flows through it mostly

I have a very tenuous link. And maybe appertain.

My daughter was a plodding runner - but managed to represent the County to add to her CV. But that means she has rubbed alongside runners for the past few years at Uni. And her London flat mate training partner was in the 4 by 400 metre team. I have seen the hours these youngster spend and the emotional trauma of being really, really good, but just not quite good enough, by just a split second compared to the competition, conscious there is only a few years to make it before being too old. By the way my daughters flat mates father is a sheep farmer from Wales.

Yes tickets certainly were not cheap. There were still tickets on Sunday but would have been £125/head to see the athletics! Promoting sport and putting funding into an area is indeed a good thing.

shame really, but other than a snippet or two on the news never had time to watch any of the games nor could I tell you the name of any gold medal winner or for that matter any participants. Yet when I was a lad represented school in county finals and at college was victor ludorum in running and field sports . One of my abiding memories of watching athletics was that of alan wells wife shouting him home in the 100m olympic final years ago. "come on alan"

I think you have added a 0 on there. Surely 80 million would take it in ?

No, see link below. Provides more detail. But would need an analysis of sponsorship etc to get to true cost. The government had to underwrite the show.
