Wasn't getting at posters on this thread in particular but been many on here in the past about the viability of sucklers though!

My point was that the older type Fri cattle still made usefull beef animals, but the above cattle aren't much good for anything ( esp when VIA grading comes in )

With the current stirk prices, any suckler farmer with half decent cows and does the calves okay ought to be making a few bob..

TB is the main cause in the SW for suckler cow numbers dropping and your post is a classic example of why that is the case!

The margin on buying a 220 kg steer for £700 for fattening must be doubtful unless it grows like hell, finishes within 12months and kills out a good U grade. Theses prices are good for rearers and the suckler boys and the only good thing at the moment for the finisher is the low value in grain, straw,fodder and the stronger current Dw price. Horses for courses.

Stores exactly where they should be, you can't replace heifers very cheap nowadays, fat buyers had it too good when stores where down

Which year was it that there was bumper harvest of maize??, yields hit the roof, next year/ ( or the one after ) yields were thru the floor... all that maize was badly needed..

As will be the case with all this years excess fodder.. was only 10 months ago round bale silage was making £30/35/ bale don't forget..

I would agree with that.. fat price needs to be £4.50 average and then the current high store price would ( rightly ) be sustainable..

Why will VIA grading affect things for those cattle?

Not sure on the technical details but at plants in NI already using it the results show that poorer grade cattle ( ie :extreme/ small grade Dairy stuff ) is at least a grade down on average but the better bred stuff will be the same or sometimes one grade better..

That's what I've been told by the Scottish plant using it what were O grades are now P grades but the continentals that were R are grading R+ which is 6p more
