Now I know along with @serf what pit vipers are... naac and nix costings, so difficult to put them to real world use. Combining in Devon or Cornwall with many 5 acre fields and obstacles which could write it off, £54/acre must be a huge risk still, you could not command that price here, not by miles, folk would baulk at £45. Diesel though, I struggle to price it in any more, leave full, come back full

Cost of labour/hour: £18 (barely covers it particularly at overtime)
Cost of fuel at say trailer driving (20l/hr): £17
500hour service/£1200 = £2.40
Tyres = £1

So before depreciation and breakdowns you are already at £37.40/hour. So at £50/hour you're perhaps making a tiny profit if its going well. How many people factor in the cost of sorting out the job in the first place, quoting, invoicing, popping in to check on your operator if you are the manager/owner? Cost of insurance? And that doesn't even cover the same costs again on whatever your tractor turns up with - trailer tyres, maintenance, brake checks?

I think £100/hour is more reasonable to cover costs. Not going to happen unfortunately.
I've been thinking for years until farmers/contractors can charge similar to the main dealer for servicing per hour , we are truly undervalued .

If your doing a lot of roadwork then it's
£2hr just for tyres (premium brands).
£12-£14hr driver .
Check your insurance your covered for contracting.£1hr
£1.50hr servicing.
So there is £18.50hr before factoring in the main costs.

That sounds like farmers son contracting logic. Daddy has the farm and pays for the tractor anyway so if I do a bit extra it’s all profit (and I can be a contractor instead of doing the jobs dad wants) fine for what you have in mind as a favour for a neighbour but not great business.
what would you’re driver be doing instead? No harm for a day, bit different for weeks on end.
Went full cycle here off the back of that theory, got up to 2700 acres at one point off the back of what we owned initially, kept building and building off it until we had a modern fleet, got to the point it became a cut throat job contracting and didn't wish to be part of the party, so ditched anything on finance, most of the contract work and now have a super setup for the future and well over geared. It rode a few low points very well and put us in a far better situation than sitting stagnant
