Staff salary / hourly wage?

Seems to be few people willing to disclose what they pay so I shall put my head above parapet.

Currently we pay
£40 a milking 280ish cows block calved. Paid flat regardless of how many in milk
Calf lady is salaried £2k inc vat
Admin girl ( her daughter) £40 a month
Plate metering lady is £15 an hour( i think)
Tractor driver salaried on a relative pitance I think £320 a month. Significant other benefits are added in.
also have a guy guy £10 an hour

all self employed

Id love to pay everyone more and do review upwards annually. Lots of other perks go alongside.
Rates are inline with what other local employers offer.

a beer on a hot day or a cuppa tea when your having a sh!t one goes way further for lots of people.

How long does a milking take?

Some farms they seem to be doing something from 4am until gone 11am, and the poor fudger has done the milking in that time as well.

£10 self employed . Is that even legal? How does he/ she afford to pay their bills .
I can get £15/20 hr to cut grass for people
Paid as £10, lots of fag breaks, tea breaks ( for obvious reasons these are encouraged and part of the dayetc he works minimum wage employed job full time and comes to us for a change/ a break. I offered him more today and he said not to worry he’s quite happy as he is.

cups on at 5 be out from there by 7:30 at peak am. Pm milking 3-5 relief milkers mostly do the afternoon shifts. Suits them and suits me. In the summer it will be sub 1 hour for a good 4/5 weeks.

Be careful with the tractor driver we had a man on the books only wanted minimum wage and I think from memory 27 hrs as that was the sweet spot for him to claim maximum benefits
So if it’s a cq or bank transfer be careful you don’t get caught up in something that’s not your problem

Yes. I'm angry on his behalf.
A different farce over the summer at summer job 'darn sarf' had soured him to a well known farm management company.
He was just getting his confidence back and looking forwards.
Latest update. Farmer up the road has no problem with new min wage and review again this side of harvest. I bet.

Well done for sticking your neck out. (y)
I'll have a guess that there are plenty of places similar, who just don't want to say.

it’s far from perfect but it’s what we’ve got. No one is here under duress and rates are all always up for discussion. There is a fine balance too of money vs enjoying your job. We’re extremely fortunate that everyone who we get to work with has a brilliant attitude and that’s goes both ways. Huge amount of flexibility whenever we can. I’m sure there are plenty of people who have to pay more because they aren’t the nicest to work for.

You love a wages thread don't you!?🤣
I do, more so because I think there's a lot of shite talked in them.
As an employee (not at the moment) it's one of the main things we think about, as that's all we have to pay the bills.

If someone started a thread saying, what should I get for wheat and a bunch of people who didn't grow or buy wheat started saying, you should get 600 quid a ton, can't live on less than that, you'd be along to explain the reality, I'd imagine 🤷‍♂️

I’ve posted this before but honestly don’t know why so many of you won’t post about money….

Over two Ltd companies i run I get a combined salary of £45,000, with a free house and utilities out of one buisness and a free car and fuel out of the other.

I employ two members of staff on my side of the farming business (we will forget brothers dairy side for now) both don’t have accommodation as they live locally and are on £15/ hr time and a half after 39 hours. Both work 8-5 m-f with overtime as and when needed.

On the HGV’s it’s a mixed bag depending on experience and age but I would say the average is about £16/hr time and a half after 39 hours and a night out bonus of £30 per night in the truck. And again no accommodation provided, although they do run there digi card out every week and max out there hours.

Yep definitely more to life than just high wages, as long as people can get by with what they earn and are happy in what they do.
More to the point how does anyone live on that? How the fudge do you run a car?
How much do you get paid for all the farmwork you do between medical training Ollie?
having breakfast this morning in hotel and next table was farm manager of biggish estate
just had new key main man 18.50 an hour plus ot no perks though
Overtime at a higher rate or flat 18.50.
Seems good depending on the role.

Mate of mine is a ‘lead operator’ for a contractor. Dosnt make any real decisions just drives one of the choppers then on to a combine so leads a team of people most of the time but he’s on £17.50 for 40 hours then time and a half after that, PAYE paid weekly.. Reckons he does about 2500 hours a year, that’s about 50 hours a week on average.

Exactly, I enjoy the lifestyle here so much that last month was free, and I wouldn't shift if someone offered 50% more

I get:
2500ha to treat as my own
5 bedroom homes in great nick
Free internet, power, fuel
Free grazing for our livestock
No expectation regarding the hours I work, $35/hr after tax

The biggest perk is being left to it, we can run our own cattle / grazing business, be absent, whatever works for everyone.

People often wonder what they need to do to attract and retain staff, but it's clear that what you need to do/pay comes second to how you need to be.
Get that right, and the doing takes care of itself

Bet 2000 of those hours are May to October like most contractors, don't know how the senior guys do it, especially once children come along

If paid weekly that works well with the OT as it wouldn’t get evened out with a slack week if paid monthly.
I gave up contracting to come home to work quite afew years ago now as above, the long haired general wasn’t a fan of being a harvest widow for 7 months of the year and having to find me in the middle of no where for a cab date if she wanted to see me.
