When Diane Banville’s husband Kevin (33) died in a farm accident on St. Patrick’s Day 2014 her whole life changed “in a split second”.

The couple had been married just 11 months and were celebrating the birth of their second child; for Diane “everything changed” on March 17 when Kevin went out to his farm and never came home.

Diane and Kevin’s sons Ryan (7) and Cillian (5) are to the fore now as far as their mother is concerned and her focus is on their emotional and psychological well-being.

In the aftermath of her husband’s death Diane reached out to Embrace FARM – Ireland’s dedicated farm accident support network for those that have been affected by farming...

The NFU’s initial response to the government’s latest proposals to replace the Irish/ Northern Irish ‘backstop’ includes the observation that it’s getting ‘very late in the day’ to achieve a breakthrough.

Commenting this morning, the union said: “We have argued strongly that we cannot leave the EU without a deal if we are to avoid significant damage to UK farming. While we welcome the fact that the government is continuing to pursue a deal with the EU that would secure an orderly Brexit, it is getting very late in the day and it of course remains to be seen whether the latest proposals will lead to a much needed breakthrough in negotiations.

Nitrogen fertiliser utilisation efficiency (NfUE) is a useful indicator when making grassland nutrition choices. It tells you precisely how much of your valuable N is reaching plants and how much is being lost to the atmosphere or left in the ground.
Numerous trials over many years have shown that Ammonium Nitrate (AN) fertilisers, like Nitram, comprehensively outperform all sources of urea giving a consistent 10% lift in NfUE that gives protection against challenging growing conditions and difficult years, whilst boosting enterprise profitability.

Fresh milk processor Muller Milk & Ingredients has warned its Scottish suppliers that their 25% surge in farm milk production has not been supported by growth in the local market.

The firm claimed that a result, the increase was not sustainable and would have “significant environmental consequences” as the extra milk is currently transported to England to be sold.

The dairy business has confirmed a review with its 230 dairy farmer suppliers in Scotland to address the issue strategically.

It comes less than a year after Muller completed the largest single investment in Scottish dairy processing in a decade.

The £15 million project saw substantial upgrades made...

A commitment by the Government to significant levels of investment into the country’s infrastructure and public services has been welcomed by the NFU.

Union Vice President, Stuart Roberts, said the investment promise made by Chancellor Savid Javid to the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester would help ‘equip’ farming businesses and rural communities, giving them improved connectivity and other services, which are so desperately needed.

The Union’ upbeat response followed the Chancellor’s announcement of new investment in roads, bus services, and broadband in what he called an ‘infrastructure revolution’.

The package he outlined included £5bn to support...
