I'm more than happy to take a chance on (End Jan) until 10th Feb.

But how much further to chance it is going to be an interesting decision.

Worked OK here in 2013 when we turned every (End Jan) variety into (End Feb) - and then had 22 frosts in March.

edit :- as one of the Moulin generation, I know exactly how it feels to cut 400 acres of wheat with no grain in it.

Unfortunately, the HGCA don't seem to have bothered to spend any of the many thousands I've sent them over the years upon this problem, but a bit of work's been done in the US.

400ac?? With no grain!!
Is that how you got your name?
I grew 100 ac of that red wheat once, it looked fantastic but only had about 4 grains per ear
Yielded half a ton per acre
It was organic @ £300 ton so not a total disaster

I recall Moulin. I think you are being a tad harsh on HGCA. The recommended list has a latest safe sowing date listed from data supplied from breeders. Going beyond those dates is a risk, which one has to weigh up based on local circumstances at the time. Vernalisation is a complex and not totally understood phenomenon. The US work you quoted is no different the practice in UK and is again variety specific. Like most things with nature the variables are numerous as are the interactions. I am not sure what you think HGCA could do differently with your levy money to assist? The problem as you put it has good sound advice - the latest safe sowing date. Beyond that there is risk. But a risk which can be assessed and decided. So my view is to go an additional 14 days then have a think.

Wouldn't have cost too much over the past 7 years since this problem last arose in 2012/13 to carry out cheap and simple trials with, say, three different WW varieties of different maturity characteristics at three widely different locations and at three different planting dates in the spring.

Would have provided enough good data to publish an interesting interactive risk mapping exercise with yields correlated with sowing dates/variety/ latitude/ height above sea level, etc.

No need to have gone public with either the results or with the advice until now when they are actually needed.

Hi, but the data from breeders resulting in latest safe dates is just what you say.

I do not know but may ask if I come across any of the breeders how many trials they would need to give more definitive local information because to be any more specific than it is now I suspect requires quite a lot of sites. And then there would have to be a reasonable / considerable safety margin built into any advice as my observation is a farmer demands information, but then is soon to complain / claim if it goes wrong. And I cannot see any breeder or HGCA to have claims lined up based on ever speculative latest safe dates.

I have seen winter wheat not vernalise - and it just stayed as flag leaf. Was used to finish off a spring wheat heaadland.

Best wishes,
