Turned Down wellies

The reason that I bought short wellies with an elastic gusset, similar to the ones shown by the OP, was that I have swollen ankles. Despite taking a daily diuretic tablet, I still couldn't get long ones on. I'd been wearing dealer boots for quite a few years

You see fishermen wearing the tops turned down presumably as a safety feature if they need to get their boots off quickly iif they fall in, don't know if they have hairy legs or not ?
Yes, indeed you are not wrong in saying fishermen wear their wellies with the tops turned down. Anytime I take a ferry crossing to a Island off West Cork here in Ireland, I nearly always wear my wellies turned down.

I think we need a randomised double blind study about the fishermen thing.
Start with the full welly then roll the top down 1 inch at a time to max 6 inches.. Throw 100 fishermen overboard in each group which should give a statistically significant result.

From my experience talking to guys about wellies, those who turn down often say it was because their father did it. Common too with Eastern European lads.

I hesitate to contradict an Irishman on this subject, but I think you'll find the correct term is 'gumboots'. (y)

Thanks for advising me of the correct term "gumboots" I am for sure an Irishman, still wearing turned down wellies these days. Rare enough nowadays !!

As Wellington’s boots were for riding & made of leather, not for wading through cow sh!t, I’d say “gumboot” IS a more appropriate name for your rubber / plastic waterproof footwear 🤣🤣
