I’ve gone 50% gp4 hards this year, been growing Gp3’s pretty successfully for a long period but their weakness on Septoria is really exposed without CTL so they are too risky to grow along with their yield deficit to feeds

can’t justify the extra N at these prices with no guarantee of quality

What everybody seems to be talking about is the constant manipulation of the markets by supermarkets and processors with importing product,as a loss leader,to put pressure on UK produce. This just shows what an absolute farce RT is which puts our produce at a disadvantage with all the costs associated with compliance.
We jump through every hoop with ever increasing regulation and constant gold plating, with a lot more to come, whilst imported foods enter the UK with little assurance and traceability. The whole situation is weighted heavily against us.

£1275/t?
???

£766/t that’s just a screen grab for twitter, a member logging in would see far more detail

but ignore the price or even the product in my tweet and marvel at the replies from farmers who seem to believe handing supplies power by keeping prices secret is in farmers best interest !

i even ended up offering a £1000 charity donation yet still for some inexplicable reason the farmers price amd supplier is “a secret“

thr same mentality applies to outputs

buy retail, sell wholesale springs to mind !

Oh right. Its just that it clearly says "600kg bag" for £766 ex vat...

Perhaps underneath it says the 'per tonne' price but I think its fairly unambigious there.

Also there's merchants doing it for less than that today. But I'm sure simply by saying that you'll accuse me of unecessary secrecy, or say that farmers are their own worst enemy. But I am running a business and so don't want to jeapordise my superious buying power by upsetting my trade relationships. Because that would cost me profit. I also don't farm for the benefit of other farmers so am not overly concerned that this is costing them as a whole.

Because my supplier has asked me not to, or at least implies that its not for public consumption. Its just politeness really.

I really don't think UK ag is doomed because we don't share specific prices with each other. Its very clear what the rough ballpark is, based on global commodity values. I think perhaps you are being a tad over-dramatic. The existence of compare the market hasn't made insurance 90% cheaper, because people have always been able to ring round several suppliers, its just made it a lot easier to do.

Before you thought of farmdeals, did you just use to buy from the first person you rang? No, as a sane person you will have phoned a couple and gone "well the last guy was £30 cheaper, what can you do?".

One might even say that UK ag is doomed if we all stop thinking for ourselves and buy from a single buying group?

Have another business but I want to jack that in one day and farm full time. Dad is well past retirement and I enjoy it but things get tighter. Reducing reliance on vet med and bought in feedstuff is essential to carry on. It is mainly arable land which could all be ploughed up but we have always run it as a mixed farm.
Out of interest, what's the vet meds you got to reduce?

its not politeness, its so prices can be maintained ……. it is not in farmers best interest

trust me, your supplier has no loyalty to you, you are just ££’s to them

I don’t want a single buying group, i want as many suppliers as possible BUT I want transparency in prices do i can easy find the best prices and open competition to make sure the best possible prices are on offer

you know …….. just like the world beyond uk agriculture works

Well, of course I know why merchants are in business...but its still polite.

What have I done to deserve Farmdeals Ltd's loyalty?

farmdeals doesn’t ask for your loyalty, it demands no commitment or price secrecy - buy from who you choose and share the best prices with other farmers so we can all benefit ?
But many might be wondering why they would want others to benefit when they can achieve better prices than farmdeals can? It may benefit those with the lowest buying power, or who won't do the leg work themselves. For example, you are quite a large farmer so I fully expect that you've got your urea better than £766/ tonne. You can probably also order 6 or 7 lorries at a time so you are a much easier proposition than a little farm in the hills who only orders 3 tonne at a time. There's often more to the deal than price.

FarmDeals actually does this better than most - prices reflect cost of delivery / qty/ credit etc very transparently

others just average, some farms do benefit from that but it costs others

it’s certainly not just a big farmer group - it aims to work for all snd i would say to date it’s the smaller farmers members that are benefiting most from it

The trade certainly dont like us sharing what prices we pay - I got a call from a company who were very upset that I had disclosed what I paid for fertiliser

did you ask why ? i find they go quiet when i do !

they are in business to sell so surely they should be thankful you shared their “excellent” price as surely it will
lead to more sales ?

……. or is there maybe something else more sinister going on here ? !

Sounds like the trade giving differing prices for different farmers like POA on machinery.

They made excuses that I had got the name of the supplier wrong (subsequently not the case) - I did ask if they would like me to post the details of our conversation.

Same here with a buying group we used in the past , there’s no signing of an official secrets act when buying fert , I simply told them i will do as I like Over price PAID. It is unbelievable you got a call , I hope you put them in there place.
