IMO the key to Blackgrass and Ryegrass is to take a zero tolerance approach before it gets to be a problem...I am really scared of ryegrass as I hear it is much worse than blackgrass.
ive mentioned it on here quite a lot because I think it’s really exciting but the redekop seed control unit we are trialling was developed for ryegrass in Australia. It destroys seeds as they come out the combine. Ryegrass isn’t a problem for me (yet) but one of the other farmers on the trial has a big problem and it’s proving really effective. I think last year from winter barley into oilseed rape they had a 60% reduction in seedlings, it’s accumulative so won’t be a one year wonder but over a few years should really make a difference on weeds that still hold most of their seeds at harvest . They had 87% of the ryegrass seeds still available in the ear at harvest to go through the combine.
