Grass weed explosion

I am really scared of ryegrass as I hear it is much worse than blackgrass.
ive mentioned it on here quite a lot because I think it’s really exciting but the redekop seed control unit we are trialling was developed for ryegrass in Australia. It destroys seeds as they come out the combine. Ryegrass isn’t a problem for me (yet) but one of the other farmers on the trial has a big problem and it’s proving really effective. I think last year from winter barley into oilseed rape they had a 60% reduction in seedlings, it’s accumulative so won’t be a one year wonder but over a few years should really make a difference on weeds that still hold most of their seeds at harvest . They had 87% of the ryegrass seeds still available in the ear at harvest to go through the combine.
IMO the key to Blackgrass and Ryegrass is to take a zero tolerance approach before it gets to be a problem...

I agree, this is why I am taking a zero tolerance approach with ryegrass and brome.
Unfortunately round here blackgrass has been a major problem way before I was involved with farming so I have to deal with what’s here.

The Redekop seed terminator is great, but it only destroys seed not already shed.

Blackgrass has ears emerging here. It has already caused serious crop competition where it is bad here. The plough is getting more work this autumn. Spring barley on bad fields just isn't enough to reduce the burden.

Strip tillage is great for reducing passes but it disturbs a lot of soil at the point of drilling which causes a lot of seed to germinate.

Agree I only expect it to do a small job on blackgrass, but hoping bromes and ryegrass which hold onto seed much longer it will help us be pro-active on those potential/probable future issues so we don’t end up in the same situation we are with blackgrass.
It’s also amazing for volunteers, so a reduction in green bridge, very few wheat volunteers in malting barley etc.

I feel like a combination of a Zurn topcut and Redekop seed terminator would work well, my theory being the Zurn should get the majority of heads that would have shed pre-harvest and the combine clears up the rest.

Yes I think a group of farmers could buy a zurn top cut togethor, stick it on one tractor and just go around topping the worst bits out on each farm

Must say though having come back on the farm ten years ago I’ve never experienced a decent blackgrass chemical. I am all for the cultural controls but I would love a decent chemical for a few years to atleast be able to start from scratch again.

If that was legal would it be better split into two applications, asking for a friend🙄
Not legal. A few years ago before auto shut off. I double dosed after filling up the sprayer. In a really bad black grass patch. For about 20 metres total control all year. No crop damage. Where 4 ltrs was left to be desired.

I know 4 litres is max rate of crystal but you can add more flufenacet as a straight
