If you work on 15 minutes per cutter. That’s best for your gear and it gives you a target to do so many in that time
Am I the only one who doesn't really subscribe to the "cutter every 15 mins, comb every hour" thing?

I tend to change when I feel the edge go off them. A comb nearly always does a whole run, not unusual for the cutter to last too.

I'm good going I've had a comb and cutter to 100 sheep!

Just me? 🤔 🤷‍♂️

When I'm dagging ewes a comb and cutter has been known to last a good few hundred ewes 🤷‍♂️

I'd run out of cutters if I did that 🤣.

Seem to be having bother keeping the grinding papers on the disc.keep getting air pockets on it.any tips to make it stay on? Never had a issue with it before.

It’s false economy, the more you wear the edge on the teeth of the comb and cutter the more they need ground to get a sharp edge back.

Not just you, gear will last longer on courser wool, especially if the wool is clean. Used to easily manage a comb to a run on blackies up on Mull with a cutter change every half hour. Would sometimes do three hour runs with same comb!

Yeah but then to get the gear sharp again you have to grind off a lot more metal . So if you have your own grinder it is a false economy . Steel is cheaper than sweat, even at current prices !

Wash your discs with petrol. Also where do you keep your glue? If it’s been kept in shed over winter and maybe got frosted then it’s likely the glue . I keep mine in hot water cupboard in house, same goes with papers .

Are you by any chance using Horner glue? I’m having a bit of trouble unless I let it dry for over 24 hrs. The last of my heiniger glue stuck well a few weeks ago, all I can put it down to is the new glue?

I keep mine under the kitchen sink papers are in the house too.i thought you weren't supposed to wash discs with the likes of petrol?

Funnily enough yes I got some Horner glue.i tried it twice an never seemed to stick.still had some lister stuff left so used that.

Rightly or wrongly I put a thin layer on the disc an also the paper this time.seems to have held so far 🤷

There is a lot of really good information and resources online to help with grinding, shearing pattern, footwork, hydration, fitness. There’s also a fair share of duff info too, but these are the two main ones I would recommend.

Robbie Hislop with shearing school on Facebook does some fantastic videos of different approaches to the same thing, because once size does not fit all. His courses are fantastic, he has a brilliant way of teaching.

Dwayne Black with his LOJIK app and Facebook page covers pretty much everything.

Done it a few times, not done any harm . Just use hot soapy water if you’re unsure .
Quite likely just your glue by the sounds of things .

When you’re shearing good going clean ewes you don’t notice the edge coming off your gear as obviously and tend to push on thinking everything is going grand, but the job is doubtless getting harder, as you are getting tireder, and the ewes are getting less comfortable as the handpiece starts to pull a little(ever been to a barber with a blunt clipper? I have, he didn’t notice but I certainly did!). It’s definitely a false economy, both on your gear and your own body, just the chance to stand up straight for a few minutes as you change makes a difference for the better.

Always just used any engine oil handy for the handpiece, but was clipping calves with @Top Tip. last year and the only oil to hand was top spec fully synthetic Mobil 3000, and, clipping the rear end of especially the heifer calves, I usually have to oil the handpiece very often as the blades get pee'd on, but noticed using the good oil that the blades kept their edge, didn’t heat up or get scored at all as they normally do, I can only assume that it would help the job when shearing too, I’ll certainly buy a litre of it and give it a try when shearing the hoggs shortly.

Forget Horner or Heiniger (you're just paying for the bloody name!) glue - just buy Copydex glue it's better than both

I usually change a cutter every 20ish sheep. Usually change a comb either 40 or 60 depending how it's cutting.
