Silage will always be a problem. You will be putting more force on the manual valve than the spring can. When empty we just keep pumping with the gate open for 10 se ends which usually blows anything out the back.
Stones, bits of cow mats and broken plastic feed tubs the more likely culprits here and we do scrape a fair bit of silage waste into slats too.
