Red tractor stakeholder survey on governance

Looking ahead, and putting people's pet proposals for a slimmed down FA scheme to one side, what's the next step after the second NFU surveys come back in?

It can't just be a presentation of findings i.e. the statistical results from the questions answered?

This external review only came about because RT pictured itself as a mediator between landowners and the corporate processors/retailers - which as we all know, is the first step to incorporate business property rights of all the lands throughout the UK into the wider greening economy. We all know why their first step suggesting the voluntary GFC did not go down well. So what will the review say?

What will the lessons learnt be?

The communication people think its a communication problem. The strategists think its a marketing problem. The NGOs think its a policy problem.

Can TFF/BFU influence this review to make recommendations that farmers are going to want to hear?

It's very early days obviously.

NFU review is a farce now, that’s clear, it may as well be scrapped

the AHDB reviews are the only hope of any kind of genuine review but they have been very quiet about who / what / how they will be done ? @Levy Believer ?

Is she a mad cow?
(Apologies I felt it necessary to repeat this as someone deleted it???)

That was copyright on my T shirt. (This cow isn’t mad, she’s bloody livid”. 😂

I think the letter from the defra Secretary of State today was a positive example of how farmers are valued. The chap spoke of world beating standards without mention of the parasites at red tractor.

Me too. But I didn’t believe a word.

These people never are brought to account. It’s part of why they keep on making these predictions. No consequences.

For them.

Plenty for everyone else.

Imperial College’s computer modelling aka Ferguson, Donnelly et al., are a case in point.

That’s fighting talk that is.

I think we can consider that a shot across our bows- don’t any more of you DARE leaving RT or else… It seems like a bit of a hollow threat though- if we all leave RT, will they be happy with empty shelves?
I think the supermarkets are getting scared that we’ve cottoned on to their pilfering plans and if we jump ship, they won’t be able to meet their carbon/BNG commitments.

I think I’ll be happy to call their bluff- after all the discount I would have to stomach on unassured stock will be much less than the cost of implementing GFC, and the opportunity costs that it would bring.

Hindsight? It was known at the time.

it really doesn’t matter what ‘we’ knew at the time. Consumer confidence was on the floor. Beef sales fell off a cliff and almost all catering outlets were trumpeting their use of imported beef rather than UK. McDonald’s were very much the exception to this, thankfully, but I dare say they made good use of the price drop.

Different times and now consigned to history, but FA played a part back then. RT today is a completely different animal though, and needs turning loose.

No.
As individuals, we have little or no influence. We rely on our 'union' and our levy bodies to act in OUR interests.
I, and I believe thousands of others, have resigned their membership of the NFU in protest of their refusal to address the very problems you have well articulated.

So I don't think I, and many others just let this happen.
You of course, may have.

It hasn’t just happened in the last couple of months, it has been gradual creep over the last 20 years or so. Resigning membership over it in the last few months is a protest, but shutting the stable door long after that horse has bolted.

‘We’ have allowed it to happen as ‘we’ have allowed RT & NFU to go unchallenged on this. Nobody else to blame, ‘we’ have let it go on.

For the record, I am still an NFU member. I will remain so as long as I think they are representing my best interests which, apart from RT, I think they do. I struggle to fault what the team at NFU Cymru are doing regarding ag policy in Wales, despite Drakey’s best efforts, and that I’d far more important to me personally than RT ever will be.

No but she has made great contributions to Welsh agriculture.
What a shame she has thrown her reputation away by backing this disgraceful nonsense.
And well done to our own JP by continually pushing her to admit the truth and how sad to see her clinging to the false narrative coming from NFU HQ.
I felt it important to thank her for at least replying to all of my posts bar the last - I think she was pulled TBH

I also thought it appropriate to say my direct and strong questions were not personal to her and recognise how highly others think of her for doing what she does for Welsh agriculture. Certainly I've seen how active she is over TB and in particular the mad members of the Senedd

For the record, I resigned my membership a few years ago after complaining about the NFU's conduct with respect to RT for many years previous to that.
Like you, it was the only issue I had, but when you see their dogged determination to persist against the will and interest of their members, as well as non- members, you really have to wonder how often they have fallen short in representing our interests on other matters.

By their standards we might be, but that's still pish.
If I burn 350 million year old fossil fuel, (or use fert or plastics from FF) I won't ever be carbon neutral as long as I've got a hole in my ....donkey.

No amount of creative accounting can mend that lie, and I wish we'd all face up to it.
I take it a lot of brains inside the establishment know it's the way it is, but can't stop the juggernaut.

Let's see the Calculation then

Fair enough.
As long as you realise the direction of travel is such that you will probably have no market for your unassured grain in a few years, at most.

Quite rightly too @JP1 . Being civil and respectful, where appropriate, will keep far more doors open for engagement than the more usual hysterical ranting we see more commonly.

I know I shared the spoof Hitler YouTube but that was mainly because the original TFFer couldn't get the link to work on his post

I worry when I see personal abuse towards Minette Batters as I believe it devalues our very valid points holding her to account

I have my annual insurance review booked on Monday.

Been with NFU mutual for last few years and they still come out very competitive on price and I can’t fault them on any claims I’ve made.

But the mutual rep has tried to get me to join the NFU every year, it’s not just about the discount on offer, it’s we can do X Y Z for you.

Ive had the whole debate around red tractor repeatedly with him and he just can’t see the issue.

im actually really looking forward to Monday.

Can’t wait to pile in again and now have a lot more ammo.

Plus I used to think the mutual are independent of the union….😂
Can you do it on Zoom please?
