what on earth changed in a week ?

Nothing.

Day 1 of NFU conference made for a good soundbite - a "win" for NFU and government.

The cynic in me says that it was all decided weeks ago that they would announce and then announce they would cancel it at the NFU conference to seem like they (Government) are doing something good for UK farmers! NFU can then try and chalk it up to a "win" for themselves. 😂

Its as certain as Putin’s murder of Navalnaya and it’s called “playing politics” - Similar in process to putting in for planning permission for more than you expect so that you can “give way” on a point or two to get what you really wanted in the first place.

You big cynic you! :bag: Probably got it spot on though. They time these things to maximise political advantage, whether to hide bad news on a bigger bad news day, or to glorify their triumphs for maximum publicity.

double cab sales to farmers is probably insignificant vs construction or many other industries in reality

also most farmers are not ltd so the BIK treatment actually made no difference for most farmers

Around here most are run by farmers and builders plus utility companies who may or probably more often do not allow private use. So no BIK for them. There are a few reps and others who are employees subject to BIK but certainly around here they are a tiny minority of all users.

However the general income tax, corporation tax and VAT situation would have made a massive difference to all these. By far the majority of new pickups are bought by VAT registered businesses, not private buyers.

Everyone has had their tax increased. be thankful you aren't a high rate tax payer on PAYE, they get hammered.

I've just put our two cars through their MOT's and had them serviced and one cam belt. That's over a grand. I don't get to claim the VAT back, or offset the bills against tax. As I eluded to up thread, there's a lot of ways businesses can and do offest things against tax. Just looking abck at Lamma, most of the clothes people would have been wearing would have been put through the farm. As was the truck, the fuel, the food and the day out.

The farm house needs repair, put it through the farm
The farm house needs heat and electric, put it through the farm. And the water.
The car goes through the farm
So do most of your clothes.
The phone and tablet goes through the farm
The business owner owns the premises, sets up a LTD company, which he/she/they/them own, and rents the premisis to the firm.

I know plenty of people spending 4 and 5 grand a year just on train tickets to get to work. They don't get to claim that back, or any tax relief on it.

You can still have your crew cab, you'll just have to treat it as a car, as that's what most are being used as, if you don;t want to pay that, then get a regular or extended cab. They are, after all, commercial vehicles.
A lot of That is not true, you can't put "normal" clothes through only protective clothing such as overalls and waterproofs, safety boots and wellies ok, not much of those at Lamma, you can only put a percentage of car costs through the books any private use not allowed, same as power and light, repairs on the farmhouse only a certain percentage, of course you can claim more but if you have an inspection then you will get fined. You even have to pay tax on milk, meat and eggs consumed, it's not just farmers but all self employed
Plenty of employees get perks that self employed don't, such as free/ subsidised canteens, health care, some also get clothes provided free, they get to work in a warm office or factory and don't pay for the heating, some get tools paid for .
They also get sick pay, holiday pay and a pension contribution plus some of their national.insurance all paid for by their employer.
Then there is the free training courses etc etc
Swings and roundabouts, pro's and cons to both ways.
