Red tractor spot inspection

yes, but some of your cattle are rare breeds, with bloody great long horns................... are you really surprised they don't want to get to close ............

few years back, had a problem with an early morning walker, leaving gates open, got totally peed off with that, bought some l/horn cattle, it ceased to be a problem.

dived head first over a hedge once, mate asked me to check his highlands, while away for a couple of days, one calved, so walked up to check it, big mistake !!
Never seen a Galloway with horns .....

I was trying to explain the stress of farm assurance to someone last year.

It's not that I don't do paperwork or have a tidy up. It's just that when you have an inspection, you have to have everything completely up to date, every 't' crossed and every 'i' dotted, even if you are in the middle of calving, or another busy time of year, when you just don't have any 'spare time' to catch your breath. If you have been struggling with your health, or just over-worked, or supporting a family member, the paperwork can slip for a few weeks, as your priority is your livestock, keeping them looked after, healthy, fed, watered, milked. It's not that you don't have the information there, it's just not necessarily in the correct format for an inspection. Cow 123 has lost her tag and you haven't ordered the tag yet because you want to check there aren't any more to order at the same time, or you ordered it but haven't re-tagged her yet as you haven't had time. You know she's cow 123 as she has one tag and she also has a great big freezebrand on her arse which isn't going to wash off, besides which you know she is cow 123 as she has a big funny shaped star on her face and an unmistakeable wonky udder.
Exactly, we freeze brand our cows the last four digits of their tag number. If the cow is not leaving the holding what difference does it make if she has lost one tag, as long as it as 2 tags when she leaves the farm. I think these officials think we are as inept as they are and can't be trusted.

A spot inspection is rather less than a full audit. The spot inspection is to have a re look at whatever the issue was that triggered the major non conformance. Of course the rest of the farm/paperwork needs to be “audit ready”.
I know because I had one after having enough minor non conformances to make it major.
It really is nothing to fear- just be polite to the auditor!
Nothing to fear just the threat of your business been shutdown

Most of us can be trusted and records etc ok. However our vet told us he once did a tb test where a number of cows were missing one/two tags but they were all freeze branded. To help the farmer out they agreed to do the test off the freeze brand records where cows had no tags. Cows would then have replacement tags fitted on second reading. Should have been fine you'd think and a common sense approach. Was all ok until ministry came back to query the animals tested as according to the numbers submitted some were dead and others no longer on that holding 🤦

we know a min vet, had to go and do a late TB test, rather a lot had no tags, sat down with the farmer, went through all the records, sorted the 'mess' out, told him to ring BCMS, quoting this reference, and p/ports will be sorted before l come to read the test.

came to read the test, sorted out BCMS ? 'haven't rung them yet' :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: 33 animals to be shot on farm, and binned.

Some people just can't be helped
in a day to day basis 'some 'people don't have a flurry of others or even anyone at all around them doing paperwork making phones calls dealing with others they don't have the motivation to do the phone calls etc and maybe find that sort of thing very difficult or intimidating / anxiety causing
Doing practical jobs is one thing dealing with the rest of it is another both from a time consumption point of view and personality type..one .

and Some people ask for help on a daily basis but don't get it. appropriate help that is .

In order to properly help , Like dealing with livestock patience and understanding of a situation and the person , is needed. .

Otherwise nothing changes.

Glad to hear partner is on the mend .
The bit about this I don’t understand is if red tractor is doing a spot inspection which could happen anytime, why is jdunn sending an email to them saying I’m not going to be around for a few weeks, when surely the best thing is just let them turn up whenever and bump into whoever is helping out ,and they then explain the situation .to send an email saying don’t bother coming cause I’m not there would to me sound very suspicious

because, if they turn up twice, and fail to find someone, its a fail, automatically.
