"This unannounced assessment will be a spot check and no notice will be given to the farm. To avoid logistical and practical issues, members who require an unannounced visit will be asked to provide information to reduce the chance of no-one being available to carry out the assessment."

You then have to let them know if those details change. So the main farmer not being available for a few days because he is at the hospital is a major change and he was right to notify them.

If they turn up and there's no one around (which could be the case when a few people are coming in just to do specific jobs) then if no one rocks up within in hour they leave and you have to pay again for a new spot inspection.

That's by definition what a spot inspection is.

The young farmer in this case has been on a very steep learning curve resurrecting a dairy unit on his own and had a lot of non-compliances at first. Hence spot inspection required.
Not necessarily down to youthful inexperience i've had generally low non compliances, sometimes none. Had a mad cow came and gave me about 20 which led to a spot check. Very hard to make any plans with that hanging over you in terms of investing in your business. Got a call in the afternoon spot check tomorrow fortunatly had family around to help evening clean up. Nothing major just dusty parlour jars etc quite time consuming other bits and bobs and paperwork was already sorted ( they class any old nonsense as serious non conformance, or at least that nutter did).
Different inspector next day, although still a by the book man and quite particular without going out of his way to cause trouble . Was hell of a weight off my shoulders to get it over with.
All nonsense as well

Exactly, we freeze brand our cows the last four digits of their tag number. If the cow is not leaving the holding what difference does it make if she has lost one tag, as long as it as 2 tags when she leaves the farm. I think these officials think we are as inept as they are and can't be trusted.
Except that English law requires double tags all the time, not just when sold, and a limited time to replace a missing one...

l think the ministry now accept tags can come out. Not so sure RT accept that yet, they seem to think its the farmers fault.

farm assurance, and red tractor, when abbreviated, spell FART, and as a lot of it is just hot useless air, pretty apt description.

for a start tags need to be designed and made better , how about tag makers /suppliers getting their own Assurance inspection and be stopped from trading by non conformance if their tags are falling out /deteriorating too quickly .

but Yes keeping them in stock from wear and tear in real life naturally is to be bound to challenge how ever they are made/ desigined a bit of plastic and relativly thin skin / flesh i have to except that, so why cant the minstry and red tractor .?
Why does the stockman always have to be at the bottom of the pile for responsibility??

local farmer got taken to court by trading standards.

he sold a bunch of cattle, through mkt, no problem.

the buyer then sold a bunch, into abattoir, that the min vet said didn't match the details on the p/port.

so, down the line, accused 1st farmer of 'fiddling' the ages/tags, which he denied. As no replacement tags had been ordered, they insisted the tags could not be removed, and reused.

3 days in court, loads of info etc came out, TS showing how tags were tamperproof etc, records etc. Day 3, his side of the case, brought a chap into court, who demonstrated how simple it was to open, and reuse a tag.

case dismissed, and costs awarded. TS really not happy, accused the farmer of wasting their entire 'legal' budget, on this case, should have listened to him to begin with. Nor could they prosecute the 'culprit', as he had been a witness for the prosecution.

both local farmers, skittled in the same league, would be fair to say, one kept a very low profile.
