Farming stigma…. Working like “crazy”

Trouble is many make it hard work for themselves and it takes longer, coupled with finishing earlier is seen as a failure, same with taking a day off, again will be seen as a failure and possibly lazy,
Yet in truth, and I have seen it first hand, many could not hold a job down working the supposedly hours they say they work at home, and I many work long hours to avoid having to go out with wife and kids,

Just do what suits your family best, and don't be selfish to do what you want, or one day they might not be there for you to consider, and then you can do what you want

After 28 years at it I've never known a false god like farming. It doesn't give enough back for my liking, no way are excess hours worth it.

It's also the protestant work ethic, what pains you is good for you etc. Work hours associated with self worth, it's all bollox.

The best thing I do in the summer is take a day off in the week and go on a bike ride or go out for lunch. Sod it
Is the protestant work ethic thing the reason there are no Muslim farmers

When I was younger myself and my farming friends always thought that all the none farming people we knew where idle, they all finished work early on a Friday, never worked a weekend, every bank holiday off, 4 weeks holiday a year, always better paid than we were, they were plumbers, sparks, builders, welders etc.
Who were the stupid ones ?

Exactly the same here! I plan to explain this to my son as he grows up… He might not listen to me, of course. But I plan to give him this information.

There's a lot more to life than working on a farm 24/7.
Went on holiday for the first time in years last year.enjoyed it so much within 2 days of been back home booked another for this year.

Agree with most of what the OP said.what annoyed me most was after playing football for 20+ years.to a good standard never once did my old man come to watch me.never once asked how it went.all because he was too busy doing something on the farm.

This thread is the reason why I don't like to talk to family (or neighbours?) about the way I farm, because it doesn't take long for the "L" word to come up (lazy).

F*ck 'em all, I say. Do it the way that works for you and let the rest work their way to a miserable, lonely, early grave.

This definitely isn’t a farming issue. My house over looks the edge of our village. Loads of fancy motors are leaving to commute to work between 4.45 and 6 am everyday… those same motors don’t come back till near 8pm.
By the way I’m having a pee looking out the window at that time in morning. Not at work….

I always make time to spend with my wife and young son. They are only young once and I want to make the most of it! This morning I was able to do the weekly shop with them both and spend some quality time with them.

Does annoy me some of the YouTube farmers with young kids the same age as mine. Always posting a video of I've just spent 3hrs or whatever in the workshop one evening mending this gate or whatever that's been broken for 5yrs, then spending 5hrs editing the video. You could have spent that time making memories with your baby, and helping out your wife who is probably going through the hardest months of her life! But no, you've hidden yourself away in the workshop and on your laptop avoiding them!
