Previously, the only lambs that were bottle fed were ewe lambs that we were retaining for breeding so I wasn't that worried about the cost of a bit of milk powder and probably kept them on it longer than necessary.
This year however I'm keeping any excess lambs (triplets, etc), inc tip lambs...
Even after 7 or 8yrs, I still consider myself as a newcomer to sheep rearing.
As my own lambing comes near an end and my mind starts to function somewhat nearer to usual, I'm wondering what others consider an acceptable or even inevitable level of lamb mortality at time of lambing itself and...
Up until now it's been a single dose of Ivomec, but apparently research shows that the residuals of using it can persist in the dung for a considerable period of time after use and still have considerable detrimental effect on soil health after spreading.
Sheep are typically housed about four...
Imagine if these sort of losses and "death events" were occurring in commercial pig or poultry units, the public outcry would be horrendous.
But then, the middle class urbanites just love their smoked salmon.

On the face of it, madness.
However, given more thought, maybe not.
Presumably a ban would just have created a new black market, funded criminality, extra burden for customs, etc. So why not keep it under control and use the revenue for the...

When I were a lad, some of the oldies (all gone now) would've referred to this as a brough (rhymes with sheugh) around the moon and it was a sign of colder more settled weather coming.
Any other local expressions for it?

Considering how Israel reacts after a few rockets landing in waste ground somewhere, they're not going to hold back when they've been hit by what Hamas claim to be thousands.

If (added emphasis) the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election result is the start of a Labour comeback in Scotland, is it also an equal set-back for the aim of Scottish independence?
Absolutely heart-breaking, but despite it's higher profile, not actually an isolated incident.
Do the Police need increased powers of stop and search to try and deal with the increasing scourge of violence on the streets in cities?
Can anyone find me a report or headline from anywhere yesterday that called out today's inflation figures correctly?
Further increase was predicted everywhere I seen or heard, and yet it was slightly down.
On a slightly different vein to the recent "what trailer" thread, we're well catered for with two larger livestock trailers, but increasingly I think that a smaller (7ft ish) single axle would be pretty handy a lot of the time.
Could be used behind the quad occasionally for about the place, but...
Very interesting take on the ongoing Trump saga and how all those involved are ramping up the stakes to dangerously high levels without seemingly getting any closer to achieving their goals.

Not labelled as such naturally, however according to the National Council for Curriculum Assessment themselves, pupils will learn about "how harmful attitudes around gender are perpetuated in the media, online and in society" and "recognising and...
Has the Genie escaped from the bottle properly this time?
Predictions that this is going to be much more difficult to quell than the 2005 riots as there is now a much greater national spread of non-nationals than there was then.
Also, if trouble erupts in more rural areas are the native French...
Are green/black ones newer or older than the red ones, or is there some other reason for the colour difference?
Also, what is the parts situation like for anyone who still runs one?
Yes I know, how long is a piece of string.
Just looking an approximation or even approximate range, hay very dry, bit of stem but soft and leafy, fixed chamber baler, Fusion or similar.
Thanks.
Purely hypothetical question at this stage but the way things are heading goodness knows when it may become a reality.
So leaving the practicalities of enforcement to the side, could you be "bought out" of farming if the stipulation was that you would never farm again in any way shape or form...
Anyone used it for scald in sheep and did it work?
My own idea is that scald is caused by bacteria, ergo, to knock it on the head you need an antibiotic spray. Which indeed does generally knock it on the head.
But we've got a can of Repiderma from the local farm supplies shop and they insist...
Seems to have disappeared from the scene.
Odd as I thought it to be a very useful guide for application of early fertiliser, 200 the magic figure if I recall correctly.
Anyone remember it or still use it?
