Salmon 'farming'!

Local shoot had a 100% mortality rate in one of their release pens last year, after some disease went through them. They just walked away and left them, with the stench being obvious from quite a distance.

I'd have been, quite rightly, prosecuted if it had been my sheep, yet shooting continues and they claim to be 'sportsmen'.🤷

Mass mortality is going to get more likely where any species is kept at ridiculously high population density, with labour inputs being reduced and when prophylactic medication is removed, having been the sticking plaster of those systems.

farmed fish is not very environmentally friendly on a number of reasons, and even the great health benefits of eating oily fish aren't shown with farmed fish.

I have a feeling that the old medieval system of carp farming in ponds was good.

Imagine if these sort of losses and "death events" were occurring in commercial pig or poultry units, the public outcry would be horrendous.

But then, the middle class urbanites just love their smoked salmon.

Private Eye have been going on about this for years and years.

Most Scottish farms are owned by Norwegian firms such as Mowi .. so good luck going after them

Very actively supported and protected by devolved Scottish government as well.

"Despatches" or some such other investigative show were looking in to it and didn't get far if I recall.

No filming on the farms and any interviews only permitted with preset questions.

Some fisherman tell me that there's lots of evidence that it's the main factor in the decline of wild salmon in our rivers but they simply can't make any headway in getting government to take it seriously.

It does seem a particularly toxic industry on many levels.

Genetically engineered salmon in tanks on dry land fed on field beans and camelinia - that is the future:

Highly subsidised to maintain investment & keep the wild, bleak & craggy northwest coast employment figures up all the while making the devolved government appear successful & very much a no-go area for press intrusion.

Though I'd say the lack of wild salmon in the rivers is more to do with the highly efficient estuary salmon netting operations that take place than anything to do with farmed salmon, specifically on any of the Scottish East Coast rivers..............funnily enough the Scottish leadership & authorities overlook this also.

I recently encountered some individuals who are performing a study which will de-bunk the 'slowing river water down brigade' they stated that slowing the rivers/water flow down will invariably allow the temperature of the water to increase & will have a detrimental effect to all species within the watercourse & that the spate driven rivers of the north had healthier populations of aquaculture based on the colder & cleaner fresh water environment caused by the faster flow................who knows what to believe

My own notion is that the problem wasn't caused by a wee man with a fishing rod standing on the river bank hoping and praying for a chance of a wild salmon.

Yet they are the only ones who have had any action taken against them so far.

Second hand story from a lorry driver who’s company shift a lot of salmon from the west coast last year was they recon the jobs finished out there, rising water temp making the disease pressure to high. They had no work at the time as all the current crop had died and were being tankard south for disposal by another company I think was the story. Only bit doing well was off Shetland where it was still clean.

Talk about industrialised farming, there was a top microbiologist on Ch 4 the other day saying that another pandemic like covid, but far more serious, was not just a likelihood but a certainty. Don't worry about the salmon, we are doomed anyway!
