    Hiring barn space

I’ve got a 60x45ft barn that could be used for hiring out during certain times of the year. It’s a modern barn, concrete panels, steel framed etc. so not very pretty but functional! Just curious if anyone else has experience in this area? It could be used for various events, short term storage...

    Topping before Fertiliser?

I’ve got some fields that originally hadn’t planned on taking a cut so turned ewes in there, plans may have to change so looking at a later cut. It’s a very old ley so lots of stalky growth but very thin in between, would you top out the stalks before fert application? Not sure how much you can...

    Construction spec Telehandlers

Yes the 535-95 I have is a non turbo slow machine, we don’t really use it a huge amount for Ag stuff, occasionally muck shed out etc. mostly used for building work and shifting things around the yard. Any off farm work it gets loaded on the low loader, road speed is terrible!

    Construction spec Telehandlers

I’m looking to px my 535-95 for a machine with a little more reach on it. I’ve got a budget of around £25k, any recommendations? And if you know of a good one for sale that’d be ideal. Like to look of Merlo 38.12, looks nice and compact for the capacity. The JCB is a big old machine!

    Barn conversion heating system options

Trying to work out which heating/hot water system to go for in a holiday accommodation barn conversion. Its quite a small building and will be heavily insulated, so hopefully heating demand won’t be huge. Likely to be only 2 guests at a time so hot water shouldn’t be big either. I’m leaning...

    MX75 loader solenoid valve problem

I’ve checked that and it does move. Not sure on the terminology but the rod inside the valve is the bit that’s sticking, the solenoid part is working fine. It’ll work for a while and then just gets stuck in position

    MX75 loader solenoid valve problem

I had a chat with Benbrit and they put me onto a mobile guy. He hasn’t been out yet but he got me to test the solenoid, which isn’t at fault. Now it’s trying to source a replacement valve block, apparently there’s some non genuine options? Or do I just go straight to Chilton? Here’s the unit

    MX75 loader solenoid valve problem

Yes I’ve taken the whole unit apart a few times now, given it all a thorough cleaning. The actual hydraulic valve part doesn’t move smoothly, despite the cleaning and a gentle wet and dry. Perhaps I should take the whole unit to local hydraulic guys?

    MX75 loader solenoid valve problem

I’ve been having troubles with the 3rd service solenoid on my ts100 mx75 loader. For a while it was getting stuck and not returning to the crowd rams. But it’s now got completely stuck between both services. Any recommendations on repair or a replacement unit? Not sure if it’s just the solenoid...

    Square bale feeder?

Wasn’t sure if this belongs in livestock & forage or here! Does anyone have any bright ideas on a mechanised way to feed quadrant size bales out in the field/on the hill? Currently just loading in the pick up and chucking wads out, which works fine but takes 2 people. I know hustler make a...

Full time farming to part time?

I try to run over my own figures when I can but I did get someone else to do it for me fairly recently, I never fully trust my own workings out! I gave them all of my receipts etc so they did a very in-depth job. In a nutshell, there’s not a lot more I could be doing to improve my bottom line...

Full time farming to part time?

I’m south West uk. Just me on the farm now, partner is on maternity and not sure she’ll be going back to work for a while yet

Full time farming to part time?

I appreciate that, I think that’s why I say it’s a difficult to compare situations in that way. I’m lucky enough that I don’t have a major crime risk in my area, touch wood! Those are all possible options. I think in an ideal world id be able to start a side business on farm, I just haven’t...

Full time farming to part time?

Not sure how to answer that. But I’ll give it a go; I’m on hard hill ground. what do you determine as a full time wage? Most recent copy of Ag budget and costings book gives hill store lamb production gross margin at £28.53/ewe x 500 = £14,265 LFA sucklers at £21 per cow x 80 = £1680 These...

Full time farming to part time?

I’ve never done hedgelaying, I’ve done a fair bit of fencing over the years but only for myself. There must be more earning capacity in the building trades? Especially if you’re developing your own sites? But I assume that a trade would be far more difficult to work alongside the farm and the...

Full time farming to part time?

Thanks for the input so far, Interesting to hear everyone’s views. The only trouble with getting advice is that everyone’s situation is different. I’m on an AHA tenancy, 2nd generation, if I owned the farm it would be a whole different ball game. Currently running 500 ewes and 80 sucklers, all...

Full time farming to part time?

I’ve been thinking that with a few changes in stock numbers and infrastructure, I could quite easily free up enough time to generate more income away from the livestock business. However, I’ve been full time since I left school and have very few qualifications that lend well to off farm income...

    Log Splitters…again!

I haven’t considered one, I always thought they look lethal but to be honest I’ve never used one. I do usually attack the logs with 2 of us. We have a big stack of rings in the shed, one of us does splitting and the other keeping bringing rings close to the splitter and loading logs into mesh...

    Log Splitters…again!

The Oxdale does look like the lightest duty of the ones I’ve looked at, which makes me a little wary, more so now you’ve said that

    Log Splitters…again!

Some good thinking gone into that to put a lifting eye and holes for pallet forks, simple things make a difference! What’s the price on that? The horizontal one I borrowed was a fancy machine, would split in both directions of the ram travel. Spent a lot of time and effort collecting bits off...
