£5 coffee

I'm always amazed seeing people entering No 10 carrying cups of Costa coffee. Shows the state of the country that Downing Street can't afford a coffee machine or a couple of jars of instant coffee and a pack of Hobnobs. Suppose the MP's claim theirs on expenses.
If you do like coffee, the Starbucks machine in Sainsbury Ludlow is the best in the area.
Shame it’s out of order 50% of the time I go in.
Coffee, breakfast pastry and a sandwich for £3.50 is a good start to the day

As my 80 yr old mum has just been to see about a new knee as getting nowhere on nhs with 2 yr plus waiting list I should F******G hope the coffee is free as not much else is!
I found my hip was starting to seriously slow me up so I went to see them in November and they have said they will fit me in between the end of winter feeding and the start of baling. They offered me about 6 different hospitals around Hampshire and I decided to go for the private one near Salisbury, but subcontracted by the NHS. I must say there was a very different feel to the Bournemouth NHS hospital when I went to see the consultant- I noticed the free coffee while I waited and the appointment at 7.30pm after I'd finished work

They've sent out loads of Corporate PR bull ever since and it may well been down to typically hustling NY Managers but whilst the Twin Towers coming down and folks were running for their lives, independent shoe shops were chucking shoes to those that were fleeing and Starbucks refused water to firefighters going in without payment

20+ years I've boycotted them - and they use transfer pricing to avoid paying tax in the UK (allegedly)

The transfer pricing, I recall its something along the lines of the brand name and the coffee beans being supplied at highly inflated costs via the Netherlands. The result being that the UK operation appears to only break even and the profit is earnt elsewhere with a tax rate of 10%
Folks aren't paying for the coffee, they are paying for the experience. If you live in a cramped flat, or on a busy road, or the kids have just given you merry hell on the school run, why not sit and have a quiet coffee ?
Where is that chain coffee shop with the quiet atmosphere and available seating ? most I see are full of students spending nothing and clogging up the tables
Up early, long drive yesterday so half-way I swung in to a midlands services treat myself to a takeaway coffee.

As I picked up my major chain standard-size latte, I raised an eyebrow as the smiling attendant greeted me with "Anything else? Okay, that'll be just £4.40, please".

Surprised, I later googled "price of a coffee", £4.55 for a latte on Uber Eats (London).

Milk, coffee and electricity all trading far lower than 2022.

£5 coffee not far away.

Later that day I bomb past the same services, retreating back to farm, grateful for my bulk-buy tea-bags and own farm milk at less than a hundredth of the price...

A few weeks ago we were on a long journey, stopped at the Costa at Wetherby Services, coffee £4.40, but even worse a packet of two biscuits £2.80 so coffee and biscuits £14.40 for two.
On the return journey we went into Wetherby Town, went to the fish and chip restaurant, large haddock, and pot of tea each £35.90 total. To me this seems way wrong, ones a large meal with 2 cups of tea as well for £17.95 the other is one cup of coffee with two small biscuits for £7.20. if we had had one of the Costa cake instead of the biscuits we'd have been up near £10 each.

The World has gone mad

We had an HGV delivery once and had to ask the driver to wait for 1/2 hr or so to unloading as foreloader was elsewhere. Offered him a tea or coffee and biccy to keep him sweet. He handed me the largest filthiest mug I have ever seen, black with tannin, told me not to wash it and asked for a strong sweet black tea. Said he used to be in the army and that was the only way they could drink it when out in Afghanistan with no reliable fresh milk.

Interesting price perceptions... at Burghley Horse Trials, where I go on annual pilgrimage for a few days off there are obviously loads of tea/coffee vans/trailers. I usually have a flat white.

Over the years I learned that there was one just outside the main food court who sold absolutely superb Colombian coffee, portions were about 2/3 the size of most of the others but the same price. This stand often had the longest queues because of the quality or offering. Some fast food outlets sell ridiculously large portions, particularly if you are on the hoof and don't want to be looking for a loo all the time (the same applies to long vehicle journeys) then sometimes less is more.

Had an old fitter when I was an apprentice, he had a pint pot that was thick with tannin , I scrubbed it clean with a scotchbrite pad , got the biggest bollocking of my life 😖
