‘I could have been killed’ - walker attacked

There have been two people killed by cows fairly close to us in 2001 and 2009 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-14755592

Years ago in the late 1970's I was bringing the cows out of the field and down the road for milking, a usual afternoon, nothing out of the ordinary ... but as the cows ambled through the gate and turned left towards the yard one of the cows spotted a walker who was stopped, waiting patiently and doing nothing wrong .... blasted cow suddenly turned right for no reason and charged the walker and knocked him to the ground. To say I was shocked was an understatement .... all the cows were quiet and nothing like this had EVER happened before. Thank goodness this was pre-compensation-madness-days and so we didn't hear any more about it after dusting this chap down and apologising profusely. I have no explanation for the cows sudden change of behaviour because the walker was doing absolutely nothing wrong or drawing attention to himself. This was the only time something liked this ever happened .... but there again it only takes one incident. I still go all cold even thinking about it
what is surprising about this?cattle like any thing else like routine,i once walked through my cattle to retrieve combine the novelty of me on foot and no on quad got them so excited i was pondering do i run or turn and face them?i opted for the latter.

Our milking cows have always been so quiet ... they certainly are more used to being about and seeing people than the general cattle are plus it's the only time in forty years it's ever happened to me and so yes .... I was very surprised

We regularly walk our own cattle with dog. Always stay close to a fence (and therefore escape route) and always carry a stick. I would never walk through a strange field of cattle.
I had done some fencing for a well known limousin breeder (sarkley) and went to measure the fences with a measuring wheel.
The cows and calves went berserk when I started wheeling the fence line for some reason.i soon realised I was in big trouble and made a pretty sharp exit!!!

Yes but you are used to cattle and would stand up to them.

Walkers should at least know to carry a stick if they are gong to walk through fields of cattle.

Very sensible @KennyO , but as with Grumpy, or many on here, we are used to being with cattle. As @DrDunc says walking a dark alley in parts of London may be different.

So how long is it going to be before cattle HAVE to be fenced off from footpaths?
Biggest problem with that is the bloody things seem to go diagonally across the fields
If they done it hopefully they would let us root them more sensibly but most likely the walkers wouldnt like that
