RHET organise “Moo-vember” for 1000 pupils across Scotland
November is the month of food literacy for nearly 1000 children across Scotland as educational charity the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) host five Food and Farming Days focusing on food production and the countryside.
The five events will take place in Forfar (4th Nov), Dumfries (7th Nov), Lanark (12th Nov), Kirkcaldy (12th Nov) and Stirling (25th Nov) and will give pupils the chance to take part in hands-on food and farming based educational workshops.
RHET will work closely with experts in the food, drink and rural sectors to deliver at least six workshops at each event. These will include learning about venison production and wildlife management with Scottish Natural Heritage, seasonal fruit and vegetables with Scotty Brand and dairy farming with local farmers and life-size fibreglass milking cows.
Three of the days will be hosted by Agricultural Markets which will allow schools get up close to the animals while competing in mock livestock auctions! Other workshops will include cereal lifecycles, Scottish Seafood, butchery and nutrition.
A teacher from Noblehill Primary who attended last year’s food and farming event in Dumfries said: “Pupils now have a much deeper knowledge now of the care required for animals and the food that is produced on and around the farm. The children in my class learn best by 'doing' so there were plenty of opportunities for this on the day.”
Funded by the Scottish Government through the Scottish Food and Drink Division, all RHET events are free to attend. RHET Education Manager Katrina Barclay added: “Scotland’s school children have been engaging with our Food and Farming Days over the last three years and we are proud of the enthusiastic, passionate feedback the pupils give us.
“We are able to link their learning experience directly to the Curriculum for Excellence, highlighting this unique and valued event. RHET is dependent on the support and commitment from local volunteers and stakeholders to make these day events so enjoyable. Our project coordinators work endlessly to make sure each and every activity is an enriching learning experience for the pupils.”
