Hi I’m ordering a new tank to fill the crop sprayer would put a ball cock in it but I know the water board don’t like tanks connected direct to the mains for fear of it running back into the mains if they loose pressure is there a simple way of doing it you can order the tank with a weir but it makes the take 50% dearer????

As long as when water is off aka tank full the outlet from Ball cock is couple inches away from water line then they are happy well Anglian water were. So I just bent down the bar the ball sits on So kicked off sooner.

If you are worried about this then set up a header tank fed by the mains then feed the main tank with a low pressure hi flow ballcock. Set up right fill times will be no different.

That's what I thought , and did , but the stroker from the water board had other ideas refused to accept it was impossible for mains to be contaminated, even though I also had a non return valve , and a physical break in pipework to the mains. He insisted it was his way or prohibition notice, absolute jobsworth.

We have had a water inspection and the guy doing ours said that the best thing to do was to cut out a hole below the ball cock fitting so water would pour out of the tank instead of going back down the mains. He said a square hole is best as a round one could be blocked by the float if it came off. A non return valve wasn't acceptable as it could fail.

Needs to have an overflow in the tank below the ball cock level so that water can never reach the ball cock. Only a letter box shaped hole would suffice according to the water board inspector here as somebody could put a ball in the tank which would possibly block a round hole!

this

airgap and square overflow couple inch below inlet. If he doesn’t accept it, he’s wrong

Our 10000l tank at work had to have 3 big holes drilled 3 inches lower than the ball valve to conform to water regs.

Not a big issue.

I bought a 22000 litre plastic tank last year for treated water for the sprayer. Non return valve fitted, the ballcock is below the outlet and I have a letterbox shaped weir near the ballcock (not too close or you get a bit of water coming out of it). Easy enough to drill out and shape with a hacksaw blade. The weir can be at least 10x the size of the pipe feeding it to keep the inspector happy enough.

Has anyone actualy had water sucked back up the mains pipe?. My pipe is nearly a mile long, would have to be a hell of a suction to get back past the meter.

Not just that, but when the water companies get a leak.....do they suck the pipes out and disinfect having done the repair before restarting the flow?

One rule for one....

We had a new meter fitted to the house as the last one packed up again. Just got a card with a “as we changed your meter your water might be a bit cloudy/dirty so if it is just run it till it’s clear.

We had a inspection from water company last year. Had to put a hole in the tank just below ball cock.then he wanted to see the pressure washer now we can’t connect it directly to a tap.it has to feed out of a tank with a ballcock and a hole just below.we said what about the thousands of people with them at houses and he said they don’t need them
