16/32 v 20/40

Considering a new parlour at the minute, we are planning our system around 1 man and occasionally 1.5, currently have a 10/20 and can't imagine being able to handle a 20/40 during in winter with a proper pre wipe and post spray routine, most reps are recommending a 16/32.
Spec wise it would have metres acrs and feed to yield with auto ID, I am not keen on any adf system that I have seen so going to stick with post spraying.

Thoughts and opinions please

We have a 18/36 similar spec to you are talking about.

To me its a one man parlour as it keeps one busy all the time, add a 2nd person and he is half utilized, ie under worked.

I dont understand why people think a parlour has to be flat out, my car will do 130mph that doesnt mean its how fast i go all the time.

Put in the 20/40, have one man in it normally but he will see a boost when there is a 2nd man in and if the occasion arises where you need to get done you can speed up.

Reps will recommend what you can afford/want because they are not going to lose a sale trying to persuade you a different configuration is better. Why do you think so many doubled up parlours are sold?

To be fair at least you appreciate the benefits of a swing over, so take that further and put a couple more units in that will only be vaguely superfluous for 1/3 of the year. You're better of with milking unit idle time rather than operator idle time.

Have you seen Airwash Plus automatic dipping and rinsing?

Definetly wouldnt be doubling up a parlour!

The air wash plus system is the one where you have to cut your liners?

Milking 200 through 18/36 auto id, cluster flush, meters 6000 l autumn block. 100 cows an hour, designed so herdsman is not waiting for units. It would be quicker if we had ADF or similar. Herdsman flat out but a second man takes half an hour off milking.

Anywhere between 100 and 240 depending on season. Get the extra 4 units in at the start. I'm yet to hear anyone say "damn, this parlour is just too big".

Classic dairy farmer habit is to get milking in a new parlour, under 90mins each end of the day...then have another 50 cows and its up to over 2 hours again :banghead:

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
