2 Furrow Ploughs

.My son (13) is very keen to start ploughing with a view to eventually competing with our newly restored 1966 IHC B275. What do people think of the B12 plough as a suitable plough for this purpose or would a Ransomes (Robin or TS59) be a better option? I'd love to here your thoughts. Also might anyone have a decent plough in the Somerset, Dorset, Devon, area that's for sale. Many thanks

Hi @marshallnut , try asking on the Competitive Ploughing section, or get a mod to move this? Be warned though, the posters on there can be pretty savage with each other!

Yes, expect 10 different answers as to what plough, mouldboard and which parts of the plough need chopping up and completely re-designing

Myself, id go for the IH B12, they are a good plough to start with, and perfectly matched to the tractor

B12 is a. Lovely plough, with one big but. It may be very difficult to get parts. Ransome parts are normally available at a price.
If you get a Ransome do get YL bodies not the dreaded EPIC.

We always found the IH hard wearing....get a good set of genuine steel, (not cheap cast iron repro) points on it, and they seem to go forever

If its complete with discs and skims your over halfway there, ive dont recall having to do the bearings on ours, unlike the ransomes we also had

I've got an IH (B12....I think ) , 2 furrow for sale if anyone's interested. I'll take some pics tomorrow.
I'd be very happy to drive over to Pembroke for the right plough. Not afraid to spend some time/money on it. Thanks

Some pics. Don't know if it's a B12, or not. Others on here will know. Have 2 spare unused points, but only found one skimmer so far. Also needs a few replacement bolts. £250 + VAT.

your about £200 to much, and even then there does not want to be vat on it,
its rusty, and would take many hours to get the boards right, the discs are about 40 acre past being changed and are worn out, no land wheel, and there is something wrong with the front furrow, the beam looks bent or the bolts have part sheared, as the front leg is not in line with the beam, its on CAT 1 pins, not that would matter, but them pins are a lot shorter than CAT2, and the likes of a fergie tractor are just that little bit wider balls, so either a thin linch pin must be used, or grind the side of the balls,
so £50 is plenty,

Beware b12 ploughs, the frames and legs are made of cheese. The one I used to compete with was built up from 3 ploughs and involved using 2 rear legs as all the front ones were well bent! Not as competitive as yl 183's in varying soil types but if the conditions suit it can be a winner.

Same as our 3f then, that caught something with the back leg and never was right. Back then we was just moving onto reversibles, so it got thrown in the corner, and the next time mr westlake popped by it got loaded on the lorry

with hindsight i should have made it into a 2f, as it had all the correct wheel, discs and skims on it, and had been convered to cat 2 as well

The bolts have been pinched for something else, as I said in my post above need replacing, that's why furrows don't line up ATM.
It's rusty because it's 60 years old.
Disks need replacing, but bearings fine.
As for CAT 1 pins, it'll fit tractors of the same era, used it on a Ford 4000, no problems.Or were you going to put it on a Quadtrac ?
At £50, I'll keep it thanks.
Thanks for your abusive post.

don't think I meant to be abusive, was just sayin what I though,
however you could put new discs on it, spend 2days sanding the boards and gettin a polish on them, an other day cleaning and sanding also painting the frame, refit the skims and the front leg,
then try and sell it, would be worth about £450 with all of the above done, now do you think it is worrh what your asking?
