Thinking of biting the bullet and getting some hand held radios for the farm. Anyone with some suggestions

Hand held a pita, they're never where you want them, or flat! Hard wired into the cabs they're pretty good though, even 25yrs ago (student days)

We still run CB's, mostly because our casual tractor men also have them, so at taty time etc everyone can communicate. Simple cheap & easy but no good for any distance

We use a mix of hand held and vehicle mounted licensed radios. They’re all programmed to a ‘public’ range of frequencies but use ‘digital tone coding’ which means we can only hear messages from our own radios, and we don’t have to suffer the infernal yammering of strangers.
They’re a great help with coordinating a days work, and invaluable when working with young or new staff, as I tell them I’d rather they asked 100 daft questions than make 1 expensive mistake.
They also get a bit of banter going with the whole squad being ‘kept in the loop’, which you don’t get with phone conversations.

Find a specialist online who can sort the license for you and do the frequency programming. Brand wise there’s a lot to choose from. We use a mix of Motorola and others which are equally as good but far cheaper. £130 a set for the last 2 vehicle mounted ones 2 years ago.

Just got a couple of these to go in combine and tractor. Haven't tried them yet but thought it be worth a go for £50

Unsure on the license but have good battery life and sound quality for the money, supposed to be fairly dust and waterproof to ip67, whether that’s true I don’t know🤔

I went for the xt180.
Really only need them for binder to trailer when escorting and in field.
Can use the phone for longer ranges.
