The new year tradition is ready

In the past, the gift giving season didn't stop at Christmas! Handing out gilded coins or nuts was an old Roman ritual, according to the The Old Farmer's Almanac, but you could also give eggs for fertility, a Persian practice. Just as in their first-footing tradition, the Scottish apparently also traded shortbread, coal, and silverware, while Egyptians' specialty was earthenware flasks.

Explain please.
Dont no where or how it originated but ,,The wood represents solid structure ,a roof over your head ,,the coal so you won't be cold and the silver coin for your finances to be healthy .,the first thing on new year's morning ,each person in the house brings one piece of each back inside
My grandparents did it ,mum and dad ,,i've carried it on ,,call it tradition or superstition but it seems to work .
