I have only just learned that i have a 3 phase supply on 1 of my buildings so i'm gonna get it hooked up. Spoke to British gas the electric supplier and she said its £68.72 for a meter upgrade but couldnt get an answer out of her as to what i have to have in place before they fit it?. Do i need an isolator or consumer unit in place first. or can i just get a meter on the wall and get an electrician in to work from there. At this stage all i'm really wanting to do is upgrade my welder. and ive a 3 phase roller door i was given that might just be fitted onto the shed.

Do u have the 3 main fuses in the supply side?

I would get an electrical to fit a main isolator with rccd and run the 3 tales to the meter box.

The meter fitter will just plug these tails into the meter and hook up to the main fuses and seal everything else

The electrician will then be able to hook up to this in the future

You need to get an electrician to have a look. It is not possible to say without a look.
Be wary of the BG quote, they are the suppliers, between them and you , are the meter operators and the Network operator
The Network operator is the one who will know.
If you have the supply into the meter, but unused it should not be an expensive operation. Many supplies installed in the 50,60, 70's the 3 phases were put in place in readiness

yeah this was from before my days and it was only when electric board were renewing the wire they asked if i still wanted the 3 phase so i said yes. First guy i spoke too was spot on understood the situation and said i just needed a meter upgrade passed me through to next department to book it and she was hard work.

Can you post a picture of the meter.
You may not even need one.
BG will not be doing the meter, they employ outside contractors i am sure the supplier, network operator and metering all have to b independent

My only question is how do you 'just learn' that?:LOL:
At uni we had a machinery lecture about artic tractors with equal wheel 4wd and one voice was heard to say ' we've got one of those somewhere'.
Now he grows a lot of wheat and gets in the papers. MM

well all electric is up a ladder in the corner only got 13 amp sockets and lights that have always worked and never needed to go up into the corner to look closely other than a check of the meter.

Looking at that pic you have 3 phase and are currently only using the middle phase, you now need a 3 phase meter.

You need to know what capacity is available.
100 amp / phase then a normal meter does the job.
Over 100 amp / phase then they put in CT metering
Same principle as the sparky putting his clamp meter round a wire to check the load
Warning - I`m not an expert. Talk to a sparky used to working with 3 phase stuff

What you absolutely need is a three phase isolator, simply so that there is something to connect the meter to. You can buy one and fix it yourself. Depending on the guy that comes round you may need tails fitted, a bit of cash in hand might help things along...
