Pub question- you have a 6cyl 160hp tractor fitted with 540 & 540e pto speeds, and a range of implements rated for 540rpm input speed.

Which would you use to be most efficient & productive, that is safe for both implement and tractor??

Power harrow and rear discharge I would think would be 1000rpm? Proper 160hp will run a combi baler on 540E let alone just a baler. Not a lot of 540 jobs with 160hp you can’t do in economy

My 5m topper is 1000 speed it will run fine on 1000e. Have used 540e for fertiliser. Would fill my old sprayer in 1000 speed, tractor on idle was 400 pto so nice and quiet while i was concentrating. Tanker will run on 540e but field has to be flat and dry

What about 1000e. Very good for 3 m flail topper and 10' mower conditioner. Been using since late eighties. MF 3000 series had it as standard. And 61 series/ 62 series. All had 4 speed PTO. As does my Deutz fahr.

A better understanding of pto speeds would save a lot of machines.
Most simply aren’t built to handle 160hp.
Grass tackle in particular, most machines will only have drive lines rated at 100hp

Had a customer in yard couple weeks ago. He was berating his JD front mower.
Bed has split for second time in 5 years.
When I pointed out it was basically a Taarup 307 bed from the 1970’s and he was putting 200+hp through it he was quite shocked

There's a horrific lack of mechanical sympathy out there.

I’d only use economy for lightweight jobs, fert spreading, spraying, rowing up, hedge trimmer. Use 540 on tanker but tractors only running at 1500 rpm no need to have a vac pump turning harder than about 350-400 rpm. Topper uses less diesel when run flat out that when run in economy for some unknown reason? Balers and mowers need the power. Use to be recommended with welger balers to run them in 540 with the throttle full open at 650 rpm.

Apart from a Tedder and hedge cutter I don’t have much that I’d use 540e in, mowers and baler both need all the grunt I can provide, so too the tanker and dribble bar so it’s full fat 540 for almost all.

For the people who are running rakes in 540e, what speed pto speed are you running the rake at? I usually rake at 400 pto rpm which would only be 1100 or 1200 engine rpm in 540e. Doesn't give much in reserve for hills. Also don't you find the rake starts with a bang in higher pto gears?
