Had a hose blow in Nov lost its water went into slowmode...etc etc...topped up with warm water...been fine for nearly 3 months now the temp gauge goes up when you are idling along....if you drive away it goes back to normal and its fine when your driving it hard...if you have to follow something or go slow that's when it occurs....no coolant lost only what comes out of reservoir when you release pressure when you check the level....any ideas please...Thanks

Is the expansion tank absolutely full?

My 2.4TDCI will occasionally go into limp mode if it is slightly low. The first symptom is that the heater stops being unbearably warm, I have to top mine up every 3-4000 miles. The temp gauges on these are very sensitive, mine will go into limp mode if the needle goes a bit above half way.

Ah so you have a similar problem...yes the tank is just under full...told you must not fill it up,yes I did notice the heater not working as normal but did not connect the two..so annoying

According to my mechanic who did the head gasket etc after my 2.4 overheated due to a failed viscous fan, they can be very difficult to get all the air bubbles out due to having a complicated setup of pipework. Takes a lot of patience to sit and bleed all the air out.

Following up from earlier in the year, topped up one morning and forgot to put water cap back on...got hot as you guessed...new cap fitted and been fine for around 4 months with just adding around a cupful of water every say 4/500mile....now last week the problem started again but as before if you leave the heater on its fine drove 160mile on motorway with a load of sheep 2 days ago...when i came off the motorway i turned the heater down....5 mins gauge had gone up and was low on coolant...head gasket all checked and fine...garage dont really know...could it be the egr or is it the erg valve...anybody had the same thing....why did it go away ?

Yes a friend had the same issue, would sit idling all day no problem, drive it and stop again and it would start puking.

They replaced radiator, water pump, thermostat and fan.

Doing the headgasket solved it.
Despite it passing all sniff tests etc

Thankyou ..its so strange as long as the heater is on its fine.....as soon as you turn the heater off few mins its lost its water and temp goes up.....no sign of any leakage at all...you can drive all day with the heater on...If you take the reservior cap off when its cold its always under pressure....no one has an answer....have to change the head gasket

The fan would be the obvious thing, not pulling the air through the rad.

From what you describe could it be that it needs increased / more revs than it should to circulate the water. Im not sure of the set up in these engines, but if it has a plastic water pump impeller, it could be that its lost part of its impeller and its not working efficiently enough at low revs

They're a bugger to bleed properly.

Yours will be the 2.2? As per OP, we burst a pipe (wore through rubbing on a lifting mount - pipe to take heat to the cabin) on our 2.4. We fixed it ourselves and it went perfect until mid summer then it did exactly as you're describing.

Needed the head gasket replaced and the head skimmed. Actually a lot cheaper done than I feared (£800 - and replaced timing chain at same time as front was off engine). Been faultless ever since. That will be 3yr ago come January the pipe burst and 2 1/2 years since head was off

These transit engines must have a mystical pixie in them! I had issues similar garage advised a new water pump needed. Cue countless other issues until I sold it for spares

Yes it could one of many things its a job to know where to start,my main Question is where does the coolant go...theres no steam or smell of any kind but if its hot and working hard and you turn the heater off 3/4 mins and your done...otherwise with heater on you dont need to touch it at all and no coolant is lost...Mystical Pixie indeed

Seems we may be getting somewhere...had it looked at today by a guy that knows his stuff...steam coming from the exhaust this morning....looks like its the EGR valve... any one had this before
