At the request of another forum member ( BSH ) I am going to run a 750 operators course at his farm ( in Hampshire ) about the end of Feb.
Anyone else wishing to attend please pm me your phone no. and I'll phone you so that we can discuss details.

We have been seriously considering replacing our Kuhn with a JD 750 but having had our local JD dealer around at the beginning of the week who suggested that JD are not very interested in the 750.... and Dwayne Beck telling us yesterday that hair pinning was problem with the 750...I think we will stick with the devil we know.
However I think drill courses are a first class idea and something that perhaps BASE-UK ought to be promoting.. a bit like to old ICI Plant Protection "Approved Contractors Scheme" from back in the eighties.

hair pinning really isn't an issue in very many situations Jim and where it is there are simple solutions IMO

have a chat with @Simon Chiles about it - he think its a complete myth and in anything other than OSR I'm inclined to agree with him

JD's lack of interest is understandable given the likely effect on tractor sales if they became mainstream in the UK - however its parts back up etc is just as good as any other JD product and certainly a lot better than tying to get parts or help from a small manufacturer or someone on the other side of the world mid drilling season

Very keen on the operators course.

Dwayne Beck was very interesting about the 750a, he's a big fan of the drill and very dismissive of JD's attitude to it. He suggested, for drilling cover crop into thick residue, hoicking the guttler wheels up off the ground with a bit of string and scaffold pole and setting the depth wheel for two or three inch depth, so that the disc cuts through the straw and leaves the seed pressed into soil in an unfilled trench. Would work for rape too. Also it counters the hair-pinning worry. Talking to him made me realise how much we don't know, so book us in for a couple of places Simon!

Personally ( not that my opinion really counts as I'm not a member ) I think BASE should stick to the system and not the metal.
This is why the open day I am planning will have a small charge and so will not have to depend on sponsorship from drill manufacturers, so that it can be about the system.

I'm not sure where the OSR bit came from, I don't grow it so wouldn't profess to be an expert on it.
I also don't think it's a myth, it's just poor decision on when to drill coupled with a lack of maintenance and operator experience and is entirely preventable.

I ment OSR was the only time I had had an issue with it

agree totally that it can be avoided though via setup or tweeks in rotation
