A significant day for democracy in Northern Ireland

Green party were there, they just wouldn't go into the chamber. SF and Alliance thought that stirring things up on Twitter was a better thing to do, Naomi would've been better putting pressure on SF but no, she'd rather try to score cheap points against the DUP. Absolutely no point trying to restore Stormont. Bring in direct rule and give the councils a bit more responsibility.

Naomi Long is a major plunge in the quality of alliance leadership. She's only out to score points bump up her own profile. David Ford would have been above all of that.

Ok shes about to be made redundant there but should she not have resigned as an mla?

We are in agreement then. As Theresa May said in parliament yesterday, I am not a fan of referenda. With the same token, a narrow majority to change the constitutional status of Northern Ireland would be an equally poor idea.

The holding hostage of democracy is an outrage. I don't care what the policy differences are between the parties. The place to thrash those things out is in the assembly. I'm in no small way enlivened on this, today in particular, as a result of my chat with a department employee this morning, who told me that three years ago the prep work was complete for a badger cull in three areas, one near me. It just needed the minister's signature to send it on it's way. And so I had to listen to him telling me that, in another dimension where democracy had prevailed, the department would soon have been working towards taking out small pockets of infected badgers, like the one that has infected my herd this summer.
I was going to make just that point regarding what is probably an inevitable border pole, although it is a good few years away yet imo. To make a decision like that on a 50% plus one basis would be grossly irresponsible and I would argue undemocratic, which begs the question what is true democracy, do we really have it at all?

Alliance seem to be taking a proportion of nationalist votes west of the Bann, In my DEA (Mid Tyrone) Alliance vote effectively doubled with no campaigning in the area beyond postal leaflets, they seemed to have focused most of their effort on the Omagh Town DEA. Was interesting to note the number of transfer from the SDLP, Anti Gold Mine campaigner (effectively another nationalist) and the ex sdlp independent. Roughly based on transfer the Alliance vote in the DEA was about 80% nationalist.
Two unionist candidates only got around 40 votes on transfer when the Alliance chap was eliminated in the count process. Similar jump in the Alliance vote in the other rural DEA. While they also obviously got a candidate elected in Omagh.

Which is what has made the B word negotiations such a shambles thus far. Lack of widespread and decisive support for it, lack of joined up and shared thinking on the purpose of it, and lack of determined leadership on the basis of common and established goals. Same dangers for a border poll.

Democracy is far from perfect. It does always mean that the majority gets their way, and someone won't be happy.

Our local remoaners crying to the EU along with our terrorist MEP did more harm to the Brexit negotiations than anything else in my opinion. Only last week as Boris was trying to get a deal, Martina was running around Brussels with a report titled "The EU and Irish Unity"

I would say that Stormont is effectively dead - killed off by Westminster and not the local parties.

Firstly the Assembly decisions on same sex marriage and abortion were over ruled and introduced by Westminster.

Secondly the principle of cross community voting had been abandoned in the Brexit deal.

Both of those have torn up the Belfast Agreement. So what is the point in local MLAs returning (especially when one community wont get involved).

Abandoned the devolution project, it has failed.
