A "visual story" on farming in the UK

Hi,

I'm not a farmer (actually, office job), however am interested in learning more about where our food comes from and the effort that goes into producing stuff that is sometimes taken for granted. I've been doing landscape photography as a serious hobby for over ten years now, and would like to do a documentary piece over a space of a year or so.

Would you be interested in helping me put a "visual story" together? I would like to visit your farm throughout the year and learn / capture the average, and maybe the not so average aspects of farming (obviously will be conscious to not get in the way!).

In return, I'd be happy to offer my photography services for any private and commercial needs that you might have, e.g. commercial photos for websites / online businesses, festivals / events, to personal stuff like graduations, or maybe just family portraits. A selection of my more recent stuff are at https://500px.com/tzhang/galleries .

Would anyone be interested? Happy to answer any questions!

Thanks,
Tian

What?

I am looking to put together a collection of around 30 pictures (however will probably take a lot more to get the 30 "keeper", perhaps around 100 per visit), taken over a space around a year accompanied by written text to tell the story of farming in the UK. I don’t actually know anything about farming, so would be starting "at the beginning".

I would like to publish the finished story on my website as a portfolio, made available for viewing to anyone interested free of charge.

Why?

I believe that great photos are more than just "pretty to look at", but also tell a story. Landscape / nature photography is great for learning and improving technical skills, but can often be a little shallow (e.g. "looks good on a wall somewhere" but does not really make people think or offer any new perspectives or insight).

I was driving back from a meeting yesterday through Royston and realised that there is a whole side to the world that I knew very little about. Actually to find something new, you don’t really need to go very far at all. Sharing different perspectives is a good thing - sometimes it is all too easy to get blinkered. To do this, I'm looking to do a series of stories on different lifestyles.

What kind of farm are you looking for?

Any! However, as I am based near London, ideally somewhere that does not require a whole day to get to (e.g. Scotland). That being said, sometimes more effort yields better results!

I'm not looking to write an "exciting story" - just an honest one. "Exciting" does not always equate to "interesting" - I think life in farming is sufficiently different from, say a doctor or technology consultant such that it would be really interesting to capture the different (as well as the similar) aspects.

I'm near Newbury which is only 40 mins train ride if you're interested.

I'm a 1100 acre arable farmer and farming consultant. A bit of a Cruffy Scrunt, but some nice landscape pic opportunities.

Thanks @NZDan, @AWR!

@Flintstone - Definitely interested! I used to work in Newbury for a few years, and it's a pretty easy drive via the M4 (I'm based near Purley, so pretty close to the M25). I think there is a lot to photograph on arable farms - e.g. finding a new spot and capturing the same view throughout the different seasons / different stuff during harvesting, planting etc... If you are have the time, it would be great to have chat around some ideas!

As tian is beginning at the beginning maybe someone on here should outline what the different types of farm are - what they do through the year and how they inter-relate - arable and dairy and fruit farming and nurseries and sheep and poultry and pigs are all so different - likewise huge farms and small farms and smallholdings...

That is a great idea, someone from each sector, anyone care to take up the mantle for their own?

Thanks again - I've been hitting google / wikipedia for the basics. A brief description on the different types of farms in the UK would be really useful as a starting point for further reading!
