I've got my eye on a 4.8m version of the above drill. As I've never seen one in the flesh, nor in action, I was wondering if anybody has one and how they rate it?

What was the price diffrence? I don't see 4.8m as a common offering form Vaderstad & Horsch.

TBH I don't see that configuration of drill much around here in any brand. All Rapids or Spirits here. If KV would develop a strip till version where the tines could be swapped for the front discs I'd get one now. The Vaddy Spirit can only be bought in either configuration but can't be swapped over.

I would guess that it's about £3/4k cheaper than equivalent (4m) rapid, but then you would have to consider whether metal is worn etc etc.

You could argue that an oddball machine might always be cheaper than a mainstream one, from a dealers point of view, as less people willing to take a punt.

I like the idea of it being 4.8m. I'm guessing (hoping) that 200hp would sit nicely on the front. 200hp is maybe too much for a 4m machine, but not enough for a 6m machine.
It would also fit into a 24m tramline system without requiring double drilling on first run. (I think.. Need to draw myself a diagram!)

So long as 24m is a common size then 4.8m should be reasonably popular but it does limit second hand values as other tramline widths aren't feasible. My neighbour has a 4.8m Kuhn Megant tine drill which his 180hp Deere easily pulls up very steep hills. 200 hp should be enough - I pull a 6m Rapid with 220hp which really isn't enough on my steep chalk downland. Rapids really need 45 - 50 hp/m. Vaderstad state the same hp requirement (by way of fuel use) for their Spirit. Power requirement varies with gradient & how much you want to use the front discs. My Rapid brings a 360hp tractor to its knees if you bury the front discs but when the front discs are deep the coulter discs have nothing to bite into & stop turning properly.

24m/4.8m = 5 bouts per tramline so no half widths needed. Even numbers of bouts need half width shut off for the outer run.
