I wonder if the same thing applies to DPFs. I know some manufacturers fit the DPF as a cartridge that you remove at the designated time (x hours of use) and then have it cleaned and replaced with a service exchange unit. What is to stop someone taking their cartridge to pieces, drilling large holes in it and putting it back in?

Without altering the software it doesn't work - the ECU expects to see a rising pressure differential across the DPF over time which it compares to its calculated soot load in the DPF. This is done fuel used v time v engine load. If the pressure increase doesn't happen to match what the ecu calculates, it will go into limp mode / derate.

The black smoke can be encouraged by partially blocking the air filter. Not that I would ever partake in such practices.

Needs remapping.

A properly refined remap should not produce any visable smoke.

I suspect by the very nature of the driver, the term " properly refined remap", is somewhat alien!!

They could handle a six furrow semi mounted plough without stripping the cross shaft too
