Aftermath of hacking

Has anyone other than me had any security problems since the hacking episode?

eg. Emails to my contacts asking for money to be forwarded, e-bay etc details and passwords changed, I think I have now got every thing safe again.

It may not be connected, but wondering if any others have had problems.

What a mess !

I would run some malware and virus check software on your machine as well to be sure nothing malicious has been installed

Only the usual - 2 emails this morning from Mr Rachid Abdoul about my $250,000 compensation, requesting my bank details. One from Nationwide Online bank wanting me to change my login details. One offering me some Micky Mouse Diploma to offer a fast and easy solution to my lack of a degree (errrr... I have a degree)o_O

OK now looks as though hacked through an email from mailer-damon, an email address I have opened before and has always been ok, (it reports an email has not gone/sent correctly).

Reason I received it could or could not have been connected to BFF hackers, I don't know.

Hacker opened new e-mail address, everytime I have changed passwords in last couple of days, hacker has received notification of new passwords.

Also hacker has opened email account at first bank nigeria, obviously to receive his/her fraudulent gains.

Have been in contact with my internet supplier, who as told me all this and have deleted anything that should not be there, all new passwords again so hopefully all resolved.

Scarey stuff. I hope that you get all that sorted.

I was involved with a Small Charitable Members Society who ran a Bulletin Board to Keep in Touch with Members who were domiciled all over the World. There was also a section for Commitee Members to exchange views and make decisions without having physical meetings. It worked well, as more time and thought could be given to the topics that came up, and everyone could express their views. There were no time constraints, as in a Physical Meeting, where there was an Agenda to get through and discussion was curtailed.

About 3 years ago the Board was hacked, and rapidly filled up with spam and worse.

Despite the Best Efforts of the Webmaster it had to be taken down.

Whether this is relevant I do not know, but both the Board I refer to and BFF were hosted or operated on the V-bulletin platform.

V-bulletin had no interest in resolving the problem, or suggesting how it could be avoided in future.

Purely for Security reasons, I have for many years had numerous free E-mail accounts, that I use for different purposes and have different passwords for.

Shortly after the Board was hacked I realised that the E-mail address associated with the board was also being accessed by someone else.

Messages I had not seen had been opened, and others it later transpired had been deleted.

Within a few days I was getting a 1000 or more notifications of bounced messages a day, which I had not sent, and my In-Box was permanently full.

Someone was distributing spam using my E-mail address.

Whenever I tried to change passwords online the Hacker was notified.

Eventually I managed to get my internet provider to set a new password of my choice from their end over the telephone, without sending any confirmation.

This resolved the situation.

I am fairly certain that these situations were linked, as other Board Users experienced similar problems.

Sorry you had all that trouble. Touch wood I have had no issues following the BFF breach
In a way, the policy of needing a paid for email address might of been useful.
As the email address I was registered on BFF with, I can't even remember what it was! It must have been an ISP I was with years ago. I'm sure I'm not alone in being registered on the old BFF with a little or unused email address.

Out of Interest. In the example you quote, how would the hacker get control of the e-mail account from the info he got from the bulletin board ? Unless you were using the same password on both perhaps ?
I see your thinking on the multiple e-mail accounts, trouble is, I end up confusing myself !

The honest answer, is I do not know.

At the time I was treasurer of the Society in question, and my Internet Provider told me that any E-mail address with "treasurer" in it, is a prime target for spammers and hackers.

The way the system was set up, the E-mail address [email protected] was an inbox only, and messages were automatically redirected to another E-mail address.

I have several hundred access codes and passwords I use on behalf of clients that I use for Companies House, HMRC etc. For security purposes these are listed on paper and not on my computer. (I keep a book with all the information).

I also regularly run Privacy Software, that deletes all sensitive information.

As I said I use multiple E-mail addresses for various things.

For non-critical correspondence and signing in to various boards I subscribe to, where I use a particular E-mail address I do tend to use the same password. This is a calculated risk. What I need to keep, I cut and paste to Word, and therefore I will not lose any critical information.

The Society I belonged to, due to the amount of spam being received, changed to the Welsh Spelling of Officers for the E-mail addresses.

Spam stopped overnight!
