Swapped the battery on our 11yo 134k disco the other day. It needed a jump start after sitting for nearly 2 weeks. On closer inspection it appeared to be the original.

It's now happily powering a gas gun

The Varta 648 battery in my IH 475 is 7 years old and it started this morning.

The original battery on my 6420 is over 10 years old and it is made by Varta. When it goes I will replace it with a genuine JD one which is now called a strongbox. I wonder who makes them? The reason for not buying a Varta is because they do not do a 154Ah one like the original

I used to buy cheap ones for my old tractors and like Kev says they don't last very long.

Them Varta made JD batteries are the boys, my 3220 done 6500 hours 11 years old still original battery, thought it was on the way out as was jumping it off most mornings end of the year, turns out none of the plates were covered with fluid. All good now though. Most others I have had the past few years are :poop: the only others that lasted well are Varta on the old 2130 that done a good ten stretch.

You should do, yes.
I sold a 1984 JD2140 with 9500 hours on it, four years ago, so 26 years of age, on its third set.
Just a this week the second battery on my 1993 Same Titan was replaced, so two in 21.5 years. The new battery is much heavier than the Lucas/Yuassa that it replaced. The first was a Fiaam.
On the other hand I replaced the Toyota's first battery at 12 years of age and I had to replace the new pair last Summer, so the Varta blue case batteries didn't last long. Oddly, the JD batteries were Varta as well, both sets after the JD/Varta/Bosch original.
Not had much luck with the rather under-specced batteries on the MF740, which is on its third set now at nearly eleven years. I bought the latest set the same time as for the Same but fitted them a couple about three weeks ago. Changed brands this time and instead of MF batteries I have fitted Power Bull.

There are often two or three different 'grades' of batteries available from the same brand with the same fitment. If so, get the more expensive one if you want them to last.

Cat batteries are the best by a long way IMO, expensive but last a lot longer. One on the telehandler was changed 3 years ago, still started ok in summer but needed jump leads when below about 5oc Machine is 1998, battery was original. Loads of power too. Lots of cheap crap ones about that haven't much kick when new and are fecked after a couple of yrs

Have experience of the cat batteries and nothing matches them for cranking power or lasting
