Question
If you or I were to employ a school leaver say 16-17 to work on farm/contracting business what would be a realistic wage for them doing a variety of jobs.
Thanks in advance

I think that you may have difficulty employing someone under 18 - insurance, checking all your staff for working with minors etc.

Other than that £40 per day seems the sort of rate around here.

Wales operates a different system to England but I start our younger staff on a salary with a review no later than six months.

If you take a lad on pay him enough to keep him happy so he will take care of your stuff.if you don’t pay enough he may not care about being careful and cost you more.i know lads who break and damage stuff and just say oops and don’t care.know a few too that supplement their wage with diesel and other stuff they “borrow” from their employer.think how much you would want in a similar situation.

Timely thread for us @Kevtherev

My lad is 16, just starting out and looking for a job. He’s found a cracking place just up the road, mixed farm with good stock and good kit, more importantly a very good manager.

He has his tractor licence, has been driving tractors from 70-240 hp rolling, cultivating, grain cart, lime spreading, ploughing, hay turning and using a Loadall under supervision. He’s even been left alone combining on occasion.

He’s not afraid of hard graft, walks as many acres as I do in a hot and sunny 12 hour day, throws sheep around, mefences, plants hedges, helps out a local couple with heavy work on their new property.

I know I’m biased, but he’s a handy bloke, no doubt. He still has a lot to learn, I know, but he’s no beginner.

What would you offer him to come and work for you on a casual basis? Sometimes two, maybe four or five days a week, milking and yard chores at weekends, flexible and expected to do a bit of everything.

Not many offering to suggest a figure?

Can anybody get staff these days? Seems to be a common theme when chatting to customers that they can’t get good people.
Spoke to someone other day whose son is working on a big farm on about £3.80 an hour.lad is only 17/18 but that’s taking the pee.bet the lad gets the sh!t too.its no incentive to work and just wrong.probably another government scheme
