Above is a direct quote of the new mammals tv program on BBC One.

David Attenbourgh.

I know it’s BBC and probably not his thoughts directly….

But not backed up with any statistics or sources.

And don’t people want to eat?

im a mixed farmer and I know where more water is needed, its not my sheep it cattle vs my crops.

i think it's true and from a UK farmers point of view is good news for us as water is something we are not short of in the UK compared to other (currently far more competitive) countries

Lake Mead that feeds the Dam is 640km2,
Multiply that by 20 odd metre it was down when we visited in 2018,

It wouldn't take a genius to engineer it so that more rainfall ends up in reservoirs or lakes, in the USA or UK.

In places like the Middle East and Spain, it's a lot more of an issue as they just don't get the rain to begin with.

When it rains in the USA, it fudging rains. In the time I have spent there I was always wondering what all their bone dry but otherwise massive storm channels were in aid of. One day it absolutely lashed it down with a storm that would have made Zeus proud. Within what seemed like minutes those storm channels were close to overflowing.

Trouble with our small island ( Uk),
the , “nimby” attitude carries so much leverage I do wonder where planners in ENGLAND will ever allow any large above ground reservoirs to be built.
A very serious situation considering how much extra water is needed NOW for new houses, industry and agriculture, yet alone building water storage capacity for future needs.
I often wondered why, when thw resevoirs were low, they didn't fill them up out of the rivers in the winter. Now I know whats in the river I understand why not.

I read the other day that they are going to transport water down to London by using the Grand Union Canal. There are to be several sources for the water, one being the outfall from a large sewage works on the outskirts of Birmingham!

Then the camera panned over acres and acres of soya,i think it was plantations

I think there’s an argument for vertical farms/glasshouses to supply the seasonal fancies that are now desired year round with the land supplying the meat and 2 veg.
The glasshouses and vertical farms should be near point of consumption ie in cities, there’s plenty roof space for solar which can also catch the water for these systems.

I don’t know if it’s a particular British issue but we seem fixated on fragmented building on green field sites and creating sprawls of housing with no local infrastructure to support it.
It would be better near a distribution depo, but I agree with your point.

It narks me a bit when we hear statements like the thread title.

Agriculture is necessary to feed the population. Not much farming is done for fun and not much food is wasted before it even leaves the farm gate.

Therefore, the statement should read:

“People claim more and more of the world’s water”.
"People claim more and more of the world’s water”.
So they can enjoy worldwide consumption of geographically unsustainably sourced foods.
Eating the neighbours dog is definitely better for the environment than shipping one from China....

Not just the NIMBY's there's the landowners too, lots of ground needed for the storage and lots of access to get the water to where it's needed.

Imagine all the threads about it on here.
The superhero's that are land agents will think all their Christmases have come at once and the price to build it will spin out of control.

But how would you drink water thats been sitting in a tank for mabe 6 months plus?
You don't have to use it for drinking, just using it for flushing toilets, showering, washing clothes or watering lawns/gardens would save a lot of mains water, and of course stop it going down the drain straight away when it rains which would help drainage.

There is a huge old ex quarry hole near us that would perhaps make a holding reservoir, it’s out of site and about one and a half miles from a reservoir that’s in use. Main problem would be making it water tight as on limestone.
I do hope that someone in high places has mentioned the idea , that said as Thames Water is nearly bust , I don’t think anyone would be interested! :banghead:

That is getting more common in Spain, especially the veg growing areas in Murcia. Flooding rather than drought seems to be a big issue October to December, it really increases the real price of veg/salad.

But even Without treatment It would be ok for flushing the toilet watering the tomatoes or washing the car .
A sort of twin plumbing system with mains just used for drinking washing cleaning teeth because for no other reason than on a meter because mains water costs are going to go up for users

On our visit to China the guide warned us on no account to drink any tap water or even to brush our teeth. Bottles of drinking water were available on every corner nearly and the price was pence.
