AHL2 - Winter Bird Food

Late autumn being November, winter Dec to Feb, if you can sow plants after WW and have them producing seeds by November then that's good going. I think it's just possible following Winter Barley.
I’ve never tried and yet to find anyone that has purposefully tried in the past.

There’s a few people saying they drilled an AB9 mix late and it never seeded but they used a completely different seed mix to what I intend to use…

Theres a few people that say they killed off mustard/radish cover crops early because they thought they were going to set seed but they didn’t wait and find out…

There’s just as many advisors that suggest it might work as say it won’t work.

None of the scheme is backed by any real world trials data the whole ethos as I see it is “have a go and see what happens”

Ask me again in December and i’ll let you know if I achieved it …

agree - after winter barley for those able to harvest early - mid june at latest = realistic to achieve aims

beyond that you are taking the pee and will no way achieve aims

But from previous posts Clive I thought you are intending to sow AHL2 following Winter Barley followed the following year by AHL1 then Winter Wheat. Did I misunderstand your previous posts. Apologies if I did.

i am indeed and that’s a establishment date after my early barley harvest perfectly able to achieve aims

after wheat however ( which is august harvested here ) no way i could achieve alh2 aims in time. - 4-5weeks is a world of difference

we usual cut barley early july. - that’s a month earlier than wheat harvest here

it will be direct drilled with alh2 the same day
if the dd incentive money comes in do you think it'll be paid per each crop in that year ? I'm thinking after wheat this year put some fast grass in get one cut of haylage may time then ahl2 until feb25 then maybe legume fallow then back into 1st wheat autumn 25.

i expect it will be once per parcel per sfi year otherwise you would be double funded

unless they change the application you can’t add the sane option more than once to a parcel either

i guess we will find out - not sure why it’s taking so long to add the new standards

The aims are:

  • provide food resources for farmland birds, especially in late autumn and winter
  • encourage flowering plants in the summer, which will benefit insects including bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies and hoverflies
  • support an IPM approach if located close to cropped areas
Which cannot reasonably be achieved drilling after mid June, how can you have flowering plants in the summer drilling in October?
No Andy, you are misquoting purposes as aims. Here is a screen shot from the handbook. I have it in writing from RPA, aim is binding, purpose is not.

Not that I have any intention of late drilled AHL2 myself.

You're correct, but I'd consider the two as interchangeable.

Deliver the purpose you deliver the aim, deliver the aim you deliver the purpose.

One can only assume the purposes have been provided to guide the applicant in what is likely to be expected in achieving the options aim.

So yes, you only have to deliver the aim, in doing so you will fulfill the purpose.

It also says 'you must sow a mix of at least 6 crops that will provide an extended supply of small seeds for farmland birds'.

As this is not in the 'Aims' which just says 'produce a supply of small seeds'

Can we totally ignore this then?
